$0.33/GB!!

Check the newegg reviews for both of these. They seem to have a problem with infant mortality and they run hot.

I've had 3 in Raid0 for months, and that's not my experience. On an NForce4 controller (not 3rd party), I get 141mb/s and very fast boot, load and hibernate times.

The combo deal at Newegg is pretty nice if you need a 64-bit controller.

You know I have learned not to trust he newegg reviews. Half the time they're right, have the time they're not.

Well, I think that makes sense. The vast majority of buyers never leave reviews. It's those that have a particularly bad experience or an exceptional one that leave reviews. This makes the horror stories appear more frequent than they are. I still look at the number of votes a product has. That tells me if people are buying the item... and people are smart. They typically put their money on quality products. All I wish is that I could sort by number of votes on Newegg's site.

The WD 250 GB drives look like great deals. I don't think I could use this much space, but I'm sure I could grow into it. Good price!

I have this drive (the 8mb cache model). Its been running great. I bought it for about this same price from techonweb a few weeks back. I haven't regretted the purchase at all.

Got a 16MB a month ago. Died within the first two weeks. RMA'ed it and Newegg sent me a new one. So far so good I guess, besides that $5 shipping refund they promised but never did.

I used nF4 onboard controller and a Silicon Image 3112A (sATA 150). No performance difference.

WD2500JS for $83.99 + $5 shipping. 29c per gig before shipping, wahoo!

I was at Staples on Tuesday. They had 250GB Maxtor Hard Drives for $99 then a $50 mail in rebate. Thats 20¢ per GB!

You've gotta work on your math a bit, Mr. OP.

js

my math was based on the newegg price and I used the windows calculator not including shipping. [/shrug]

EDIT: my calculator is broken, just reran in three times with different results each time, wahoo!

If you're lookin for a 16mb cache drive, get the Enterprise version for the same price. 5 year warranty and 1 million MTBF. A guy on eBay was moving them for cheap (but doa) so I researched them tonight.
it's the same drive hardware. the MTBF figure is just some sort of marketing speak.
and it may actually lose data more often because it'll stop trying to recover whereas the normal one will keep trying
