"AMD Approved" does NOT mean that you can just buy ANY power supply from that manufacturer and use if for (any) particular system. Before AMD removed their more comprehensive PSU list, they showed combined 3V+5V around 180W for anything XP2000 or lower, certainly not today's higher powered rigs. and (relatively) demanding video cards didn't even exist back then, more like 20W Geforce2.

 
Well, as many have already said, these PSU's don't die gracefully. They take other stuff with them. In my case, an Abit dual P-III mobo.

But my Antec is running solidly and reliably.

So are the Antec's I've put in other people's computers.

Cheap isn't necessarily bad. But DEER PSU's? Oh, the horror 😛


Anyways, post the stuff, and let the posts that follow help anyone looking make a good decision (i.e. don't put one of these into a loaded rig, but something lightly loaded should be ok).
 
I have to say a budget PC does not necessarily equate to cheap crap. However, the Deer is cheap crap. I would think you would want VALUE for a cheap build and people here are telling you that you should look elsewhere for VALUE. No one is telling you to buy a $100 PSU for a budget build; they are telling you from their experience this is not the one to use. There is VALUE in other people's experience. If you want to replace people's parts when it blows so be it. Other people looking at these posts should know the risks that apparently you understand for your clients, but they may not want to take.

FWIW, my 350w Deer 'popped' and took out a mobo.

PS: From my experience don't try the cheap Powmax either, but that's another subject you may take offense to.
 
JohnDoh, we're looking for DEALS, paying $15 for PSU worth $15 and comes free in any computer case, is commonplace. It's not just the cost but what make/model/etc it is.

You think in those $399 emachines there are better psu's ?

Which do you mean? The mATX emachine PSU ALSO are known to fail, be problematic, it is the most noteworthy problem with emachines. The regular, non-mATX emachine PSU are better.

Exactly. Fry's had a SL350 for $15 after rebate a few weeks ago. Now, that's a nice deal on a solid budget PSU. The only thing hot about a Deer is the scalding exhaust coming out the back. Sorry to thread-crap, but I've been burned by these guys. Literally.
 
No offense OP, but even for budget systems these are crap. Even my generic "Award" 300W PSU on my 2nd rig runs better... and quieter. Like users have been saying, Deer PSUs take out components or even an entire sys sometimes... my Celeron 300A and old Abit mobo died, as well as a 8GB hdd, a floppy drive, a keyboard, a mouse... it literally surged the ENTIRE system. I was probably lucky the durned thing didn't set the place on fire...

Edit: For my main rig I use an Antec 430W True Power. That's fairly nice and quiet, it just could be more efficient... I think my next PSU is going to be a 400W Zalman 😀
 
Well, even if this were for a budget build or for someone else, I wouldn't feel confident putting one in. Why not spend $10 more and get a fortron that is much more trustworthy? If that deer blows, just the time and money to replace the psu alone will cost more than that $10. If it takes other components out, who knows how much it'll cost.
 

If you think this guy is exaggerating, just wait till you find out the hard way. Cheapo power supplies took out two of my hard drives with everything on them. Spread the word that watts don't matter, only name brand does. Fortrons are great affordable PSUs for example...

Wow. I had no idea that Allied/Deer/L&C had "touched so many computer user's lives". It's so.. touching. *Sniff*. Or should I say, "torching"? LOL. 🙂

PS. JohnDoh, we mean no offense to you, I'm sure. It's just that... these are basically well-known as the power-supply equivalent of a Yugo crossed with a Ford Pinto. Not exactly a pretty sight. Most of the people here complaining about them, wouldn't use one in a system even if they were free. At least, no-one that has been "burned" by one.

To it's credit, the "300W" one that I had, was powering a PII-300 @ 450 system on a BX board, couple HDs, and a few opticals for over a year in the same case, before I upgraded and installed an Athlon system, which apparently promptly caused it to burn itself up inside within a week of using it. I should have saved some pics of the cap that leaked and scorched the board. I consider myself lucky that I didn't lose anything else, considering the rest of the stories posted here.

I'm currently running the same system inside a mid-tower case with a 350W "CodeGen" PSU, which I saw that you also mentioned that you used. I can't really say anything bad about it, it's seemingly held up fine for a few years, although the PSU exhaust temps are a bit higher than some of my past PSUs. I'm not sure if that's because I'm drawing more power, or because this case also has an exhaust blowhole at the top, and the PSU competes with it for airflow.
 
It's amazing to me that people who will spend hundreds (or $1000+) on a system will cheap out the most important component: the PS.
 
I had one of these Power supplies for about a year and it was the best performing component in my system. Then one day it went crazy and raped my dog. I'll never make that mistake again. Do you have any idea how much dog counsellers cost nowadays?
