Get a case that is independently tested to the common military specification for drops and vibrations. Trident and Speck (started by Samsonite) are two brands that do this. I have trident aegis case for my phone. It probably saved me a broken screen.

No, Samsung had an opportunity to have a difference between a consumer oriented phone and a phablet meant for productivity, business, and/or enthusiasts. Maybe the oen is a gimmick the way most use it but it does look like a way to more easily pick parts of documents to edit and the SD card...
