I'm trying to set up my 486DX/66 as a router, and keep running into problems. I'm using two 3Com 3c515 cards, which are Plug-and-Play 10/100 ISA cards.
Currently both cards are in my old Pentium-2 -- which does support Plug-and-Play ISA cards. The router is being set between my home LAN...
I'm the same way -- I usually tip well (since I live on the third floor, with no elevator). When I have to pay a delivery fee, that comes right out of the tip.
A friend of mine is even more rude about it; if it's a place with a delivery fee, she won't tip at all. I feel bad for the delivery...
It's definitely a distro for enthusiasts... ;)
I like how fast it is. I'm running it on my P2-233, and it boots very nicely and performance is a lot better (under KDE) than with Mandrake 8.2 or RedHat 7.2. The compile times were extremely long (over 13 hours for the "emerge kde"), and the...
Depends on the time of year -- with college getting out, a lot of the students who would be involved are gone. The weekly LUG I attend -- which is loosely affiliated with a college -- has seen its attendence drop by two-thirds since the end of May!
Doing a couple of searches, the only active...
I've never had any bad experiences with the LUGs I've attended. They vary from highly structured meetings (with formal speakers) to completely unstructured "hang-out sessions".
My advice would be try out all of the ones close to you. If you don't like one, don't go back.
If you don't mind my...
I prefer KDE. The interface feels more professional... But to be fair, I only gave Gnome a 10-minute test drive in my newbie days (when it told me it didn't know how to open a .txt file, I was sold on KDE). There might be some bloat compared to other window managers, but my hardware can handle...
Would you post your ~/.vnc/xstartup ? That might be helpful.
Also, are you connecting to the system with the vncconnect/vncviewer program, or through a web browser aimed at the port?
I tried to install LILO, but because /proc/mounts wasn't present, "emerge lilo" failed. :(
Is /proc/mounts something I can enter manually without really screwing up the system? I can use my other Linux box for a template...
I'm trying to install Gentoo Linux from the stage 3 CD. Everything went fine, until I rebooted. The Grub menu came up, but it's not able to boot Linux because the /boot partition is on a cylinder beyond 1024 (IIRC, it's around cylinder 27xx something). Windows boots fine though. :o
I "rebooted"...
Tiger,
Thanks for the info. I started the Gentoo install about an hour ago... Timing is somewhat important because the large builds need to be finished before the 233's primary user returns home (Thursday).
I think Mandrake 8.2 is much friendlier toward new Linux users. Mandrake has the "what do do" menu option so that someone totally new to Linux doesn't have to guess filenames. RH7.3's menus have improved since 7.2 (when all you saw was filenames without descriptions), but it still has a way to...
Tiger,
Can you give me a ballpark estimate of your compile times? I'm going to put Gentoo on my secondary machine (P2-233 96MB), and was wondering how much time I need to set aside before it's "done" (X, KDE, Mozilla, etc).
Thanks!
Athlonoc,
Could you try disconnecting your DSL modem from the USB port, rebooting both systems, and try the file transfer again?
Also, do you have any networking protocols besides TCP/IP running?
You might be able to run X (needed for graphics), but the fancy window managers like KDE and Gnome are not an option on that machine. I have Mandrake 8.2 on a P2-233 with 96 MB and KDE uses a lot of RAM and is a little sluggish.
You do have a couple of options. Less intensive window managers...
