A while back I posted a request for comments on a new computer that would be used both for play and for work (software development). The purpose was to build a reasonable but fast machine and have fun while doing it. It worked out well and I am happy with the computer so-far. I am posting this...
Hi,
Maybe there is something that could be of help in this recent thread: Photo/video editing, compiling, gaming rig: X48, DDR3?.
Some of that may be over-kill for your system. But you may get some ideas.
Are you sure 640GB are enough for your pictures? I am a hobby photographer, but...
Well, there is a lot of software that can use multi-core machines, and there has been for many years.
Intel is pushing developers hard now to get them to build more multi-core friendly software.
I think it is really a problem with developers, not with Microsoft or Intel. Now that multi-core...
Yes, I have Vista Business 64. I am just not sure I will use more than 4GB before Photoshop supports it.
The other thing is, will this kit be available in a year? or two? and how much will it be then?
But this is so cheap, I will probably get it anyway. One can always run several apps at once...
But I did take your advice. No I didn't choose the motherboard that was suggested, but I did go from DDR3 to DDR2 and that is a big change (certainly in terms of money: $420 vs $90). I also changed the brand of RAM. As I wrote in my first post, my main concern was choosing the right RAM.
As...
Well, I was hoping I could still hang around here. ;-)
I don't like wasting money either, but for $150 more in a $3k system, I went with the latest tech, and more features.
You wouldn't go RAID-0 to use office apps, no. I will try to do a comparison of how long it takes to compile our code...
No, I did not ignore them. Those comments made me do some more research, and I went from $380 board to a $300 board (shipped from *****.com). Check out this thread if you doubt that the Rampage is a good board. The fact that people report that they pop the components in an set the voltage to...
I will have to evaluate the sound quality of the onboard sound first. They say it is very good (which is one reason that board is more expensive).
At work I use an Audigy 2 for DVD Audio discs (with Sennheiser HD-600 headphones) along with crappy onboard sound for Skype etc.
Ok, I am done. Ordered the Rampage and RAM yesterday. Here's the whole system:
Cosmos S
ASUS Rampage Formula (X48)
Q9450
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1000 (PC2 8000) F2-8000CL5D-4GBPQ
PNY 8800GTS 512 (may get upgraded to a next gen card once they come out)
2 x Raptor X...
Why don't you like OCZ? I was under the impression that their products and support were pretty good?
The Mushkin kit looks like a good deal. I assume you would recommend this slightly faster kit too?
