    I have one word for ya....IMPRESSIVE :)

    Question # 1

hehe...so true. Of course, I can generally accomplish something faster by using the command line than pointing and clicking. :) Then again, when you work on UNIX servers all day long, command line is pretty much a way of life. Nice picture of a computer, BTW. What is that thing? :)

    IDSL, is it worth it?

At least in my area (where I can't get anything above IDSL), IDSL is cheaper than ISDN. I had ISDN at my apartment, and got IDSL when I bought my house. I ended up getting about a 5-7k increase in speed. Not much, but when it's all you can get, it's something. :)

    Question # 1

Russ, It's actually the opposite. Manually setting an IP address requires a reboot. If the system is setup for DHCP, and you are running Win98/NT/2000, all you have to do is open a DOS prompt and type in the following command: ipconfig /renew That will cause the machine to poll for a new IP...

    Why external firewall

Overall, if you would like to have the added benifit of being able to add more machines to your network, an external firewall would definately be the better choice. If you do add more machines, firewalling multiple boxes has a greater potential for administrative headaches than a single...

FreeBSD or Linux for a web server?

I would agree with those who have posted before this. Any BSD derivative is going to better than Linux. At work I've got the firewalls and bridges running on OpenBSD (dedicated to providing a very secure OS), and the web servers running on FreeBSD. FreeBSD has actually put some good work into...

    Linksys and static IP

If you can see your local network, but not the internet, you probably don't have the default route set up (more than likely to be your DSL router, or a gateway assigned to you by your ISP).

why won't my computers see each other?

Your welcome. Also, you don't need NetBEUI installed on your computer for the two machines to see each other in Network Neighborhood (or to ping).

why won't my computers see each other?

That makes sense now. :) With the settings on your dads computer, they will never be able to see each other. I would assume that your dads computer is a laptop that he uses to plug into his companies network at the office? Also, just to make sure, can you access the Internet from your dads...

why won't my computers see each other?

If the IP address on your Dad's computer does not take the form 169.254.X.X, then the two computers will not be able to see each other.

why won't my computers see each other?

In your original post, you stated you were using your LinkSys with the DSL modem successfully. Are you able to get out on the Internet? The other thing I would suggest trying, is setting the IP addresses and netmask manually on both of your boxes. To do this, do the following: 1) On the...

why won't my computers see each other?

There could be several reasons why you can't ping the machines, unfortunately, it's hard to tell without more detail. A few things to try are as follows: 1) On each machine, try to ping their own IP address and make sure you get replies back. This will tell you that your card is at least up...

why won't my computers see each other?

Did you specify the IP addresses on the two computers yourself, and if you did, were they given to you by your ISP?
