Depends. If you are using DHCP to assign the IP addresses, they need to be plugged in when you bootup. So, in that case, yes, you'd have to shutdown (or at least restart, then plug it in real quick).

Once up and DHCP loaded, though, you can plug and unplug all you want.

If you're manually assigning IP addresses, feel free to ignore the above.

It's actually the opposite. Manually setting an IP address requires a reboot. If the system is setup for DHCP, and you are running Win98/NT/2000, all you have to do is open a DOS prompt and type in the following command:

ipconfig /renew

That will cause the machine to poll for a new IP address, and if a DHCP server is running on the network, it will get assigned one. You can also release the assigned IP by typing:

ipconfig /release

Yep, I know that it would require a reboot, the first time it was assigned; after that it's done.

I did forgot about the renewal feature in ipconfig, though. I use winipcfg from start/run. The way I figure it, why use command line when buttons are available.

hehe...so true. Of course, I can generally accomplish something faster by using the command line than pointing and clicking.
Then again, when you work on UNIX servers all day long, command line is pretty much a way of life.
