If it ran until you installed SP1 then I wouldn't think it is a HDD. I do not know what to tell you at this point except maybe don't install the service pack. Hope someone else can help more than I have. Good Luck.

By the way, yes many parts if they are bad can cause the system to dead stop. If the item is short circuited the system will shut itself down immediately after power up, so it may look like it never tried to start. Glad to hear you got it back up and running, and good luck with it.

I agree that a repair (or "dirty") install may help. Sounds like the botched IE upgrade did some major damage.

This exact thing has happened to me 3 times with different boards (2 ASUS and one Gigabyte). It was the memory controller every time. If you ran it with everything out of it but the CPU, Ram and Video and it did not post then it is time to RMA. :brokenheart:
