Hi -
Thanx for looking.

The problem -
I am putting [trying to] put this system together.
amd 3000+ 333mhz
MSI mobo [km4m-l]
512DDR crucial 2700
I won't even bother about the rest, cos it doesn't matter for now.

The computer won't post at all, and nothing comes up on the monitor [just keeps flashing at me saying come on, connect something to me then, I'm bored]

With everything hooked up, the cpu fan spins for a couple of seconds, slows down, then goes on for another second, then everything switches off.
If I disconnect the CPU power [the little square 4 pin], then everything stays on, but no post.

Is this a problem with the mobo, or the cpu.
I have tried 2 different power supplies, [Tsunami and Antec] both 350watts, and I think I have managed to kill the antec!

Any ideas pls.

Oh yeah, I've tried disconnecting everything and plugging it all in one thing at a time.
Tried the mobo out of the case, [that was when the antec died laughing].
Tried the RAM things.
The only thing I havent tried is another cpu, and i dont want to do that cos the only other one that i got is in this computer.
Cheers for now.

I've come across a similar issue before. Everything's plugged in and ready to go... After hitting the power button the hard drive and CPU fan will start up, and then everything would shut down after a second or two. No beeps or anything. It turned out that the heatsink was installed backwards! The internal thermometer on the cpu did it's job and turned everything off. Once the heatsink was intstalled properly, everything worked fine.

Other than that, I would suspect a faulty motherboard or cpu.

Thanx for the reply -
That idea was just silly enough to try out.
Well, I did a couple of things including that, now, the power won't just switch off, but there is still no post.
I tried the cpu in another system. The cpu is buggered.
BUT
I also tried a working cpu [the one i am using now] in the new setup;
It worked twice, without too much of a problem. Then stopped working - that put me a bit on edge, in case I had buggered up my one remaining good cpu.
Anyway - seems ok. [and also managed to fix an annoying rasping sound in my old psu by giving it a sharp rap.
Am RMA'ing the mobo and the cpu and the wounded antec psu.
Cheers

AAHHHH, the little known but often abused art of percussive maintenance. I was a rapper before that meant singing without musical talent.
