Hi all,

this is gonna be a little long, but please bear with me. i appreciate any feedback.

I have this piece of shxt Zyxel Prestige 645 DSL modem. My internet provider is Earthlink, but the line is provided by Verizon. Gosh I didn't want to go that route but my cable company isn't that much better (Adelphia). Anyway, I'm trying to hook the modem to the router so i can network 3 computers i have at home. however, that piece of crap zyxel modem requires a cross-over cable from the modem to the computer for me to connect in the first place. i couldn't understand why they made it that way. i tried to play around by connecting the router to the modem, but the computers would not connect up to the net. i'm pretty much out of ideas.

this is what i have done. i took the cross over cable which should have been from the modem to computer itself, connected from the modem to the router uplink slot. then cross over cables from the open router ports to the computer. that didn't work. i then took all straight cable connected the same way (traditionally this should work), but didn't work either. okay, last way, took a straight cable, connect the modem and router, then cross over cable from open router ports to computer. same thing, nada, zilch, nil, what ever you call it...., just no signal.

ARGGGGH..., does anyone have any suggestions? i practically smashed the modem cuz i'm pretty frustrated. now i'm wondering if i should just buy myself a modem instead of the one that was provided for me.

thank you very much for your time, sorry i made you read a long story.

sincerely...

KC :)

do not use uplink....

1) modem > router (wan)

2) then one of the lan ports on router > computer...

don't know what kind of cable you will need for the #1 connection, but you will need for the "Link" light in the "WAN" column of the router....(this is the furthest righ hand column)...to be lit solid...

then from your computer...go to dos prompt and type "ping 192.168.1.1" and hit enter...
if you get 4 replies, then your computer is speaking to router...(minimize dos window)

then open IE...immediately click stop on the browser....then go to tools> internet options> connections (make sure it's set to never dial a connection) > LAN settings (uncheck all boxes).....click okay...then apply/okay...this will bring you back to the main browser window...

in the address bar...type "http://192.168.1.1"

when asked for username/password....leave username blank...enter "admin" (case sensitive) as the password...and click okay....

you will be on the router "setup" page...where you will make sure that your router is set to obtain IP automatically under the "WAN IP" section....Then under the "Login" section you will select "PPPoE" option.

below the PPPoE section you will enter your earthlink p/w and it will look something like this username@earthlink.net
then type in the corresponding password for the earthlink account...

below that select the "keep alive option"....then click the "apply" button, then the "continue" button...which will bring you back to the "setup" page again...

from there...click on the "status" tab at the top of that page....then you will be on the status page....

there on the "status" page...you will see a section called "Login" and next to it ...you should see "PPPoE status connected"

if not-----> leave the screen where it's at...unplug the power supply from the modem and router...let it sit w/o power for one (1) minute...then power up your MODEM FIRST....when the lights have stablized....power up your router.....

then go back to the computer and press the "F5" key 3-4 times ...the status should then turn to say "PPPoE status connected"...

voila....up and running...restart your other computers and you are good to go....

I also use earthlink and had a Zyxel DSL modem that used a crossover cable. I had no problems connecting the crossover cable from the modem to the router. I just plugged in the crossover cable to the WAN port on the router. Works fine.

By the way, I used a D-Link wireless router, a 713P to be exact.

thank you "bbqweed" and "DreDay" for the suggestions. i'll give them a try to see what i am doing wrong. i am used to straight network cable connection from the modem to the router, then to computer, never had to be involved with a crossover cable. :(

nothing is easy in this world i presume..., wish me luck..!

thanks again....

thanks again to "bbqweed" and "DreDay" for the help..., i got it to WORK! yippie... :) although my dsl speed isn't that great from the beginning..., avg of 650kbps..., distance to my CO is approx 11600 ft. is that normal?

1st, in regards to the problem i was having with the modem and router, i was able to connect from dsl modem to the router (wan slot) via a crossover cable. then, connect a straight patch cable from open port on router to the computer, and did what i need to do with configuration what have you as "bbqweed" indicated..., blah blah blah.., finally worked...; i was cussing quite a bit as you can imagin on how much time i have wasted, not to mention my brain cells..!! :D

2nd, yea, as i was saying, the speed ain't that great to begin with..., does anyone know if there is anything i can do to, perhaps not dramatically, but at least improve a bit on the d/l speed? tweaks here and there? again, my service is with earthlink, but now i just confirmed with this earthlink cust. support indicating my line is not verizon, and is in fact "genuity" @ www.genuity.com ---> i have no idea who they are. but anyway, any other suggestions to improve?

I'd suggest you go to DSLReports and run a few of their tools. They have a line test as well as a tweak test that can suggest things to improve your speed.

well...make sure that you have th newest drivers for your NIC....go to the manufacturer's website and get that from them. Also...if you have the earthlink software that came with the DSL...uninstall it all. Since you are on PPPoE...and the router is now authenticating your connection...by uninstalling the PPPoE software that came with your earthlink package...you are in essence removing all proxies that are unneeded. Also....try to disable any software firewall....(XP has one built in...if you are on XP)

go to add remove programs and remove anything like the following:

-winPoet
-enternet300
-win proxy
-black ice defender
-sygate
-any connection managers
-BROADJUMP client foundation

or believe it or not...If you are running NORTON securities and have "AUTO PROTECT" set...then that could be an issue behind the linksys router as well.

then check IRQs....should not be sharing with sound, or video.....
