Zune software REALLY, REALLY sucks

Why does it keep re-copying songs that are already on the flippin' device during a sync? Why does a simple thing like adding a podcast to my collection only copy the actual podcast about 40% of the time? Is there any alternative to this crap, besides buying a new mp3 player? Any way I can see the zune as a hard drive in windows and just copy and past crap onto it?

Do you have the software set to automatically update metadata? It might have updated some of the tags/albumart for an album and is copying the changes down to the device. No clue about the podcasts, podcast management works great here...it could be a problem with the podcast source server. Personally, after the 2.5 update, I think the Zune software is fantastic.

If you want to use other software with your zune, google zAlternator.

Did you just install the upgrade to 2.5? When I installed this version, it kept syncing something to the device, though it never showed me what it was doing under the device status section. Since I was having issues with old tracks that were left on the drive for some reason, I had the software erase the device and resync my stuff. Now it's working as it should. I'd give that a try if you've got the spare time for the resync.

Version 2 of the Zune software was horrible about putting duplicate songs on my Zune, but it looks like they fixed the issue in version 2.5.

I still like iTunes better, though!

Hmm, I was thinking about getting a Zune. Is it really that bad? I hate itunes and refuse to buy an iPod, so the Zune lookedl ike the only in alternative for that drive size I want.

Near as I can tell you're tied to their syncing software, but for everything I do it works very well. You also get the benefit of using the 2 most common music formats (wma and mp3). It'll be a cold day in hell before I buy an Ipod.

I have a shuffle, but that was a gift and is the only Apple product I will ever own. I think the Zune looks good for what I need as well, so I'll probably just go ahead get one.

Thanks!

For those with Ipod I hear there is something called Redchair, I have not looked into it as I hate the whole propriatary setup that IPOD uses.

BUT for the real question, DO you have to use the Zune software to have it copy/encrypt music to the Zune or can I just use explore and file copy them over?

One more question, Does the Zune suffer from the problem of skipping or jumping to the next song because it might think the song is pirate or broken?

You can't use the zune as a UMS, at least not yet.

And I've never heard of the song skipping before.. what is that? If the mp3 file is good it'll play it. Are you talking like if the file is corrupt? Not sure what would happen.

Im not speaking of using The Zune as a UMS, I had a mp3 player sometime back before it had an accident and you just copied the mp3s with windows or explore (File manager).
There was no conversion/encryption or special file that tells the player what it has on it, You just copy and turn it on and it sees the songs and list them for you.

The skip reference is it jumps to the next song.
IPOD is notorious for this, If there is a broken (or it thinks its broken) bit from ripping, Downloading or just transfering from one unit to another, Right in the middle of a song it will jump to the next song, Those mp3s will work on 90% of the other players, phones and computers just not IPOD because of this stupid protection scheme.

My old Dell DJ did this. I loved it, very handy. I actually really enjoyed that MP3 player back in the day.

What you describe is what UMS is. It's seen as a mass storage device and you can copy/paste just like a USB key.

I'm guessing the skipping is a corrupt or broken bit in the file, so I can't say I've had any experience with that since I rip my own mp3's.
