It's a similar situation as with the original xbox. When that came out, Sony and the PS2 was all powerful, but MS managed to carve out a decent market share and have a good product on the market. The mp3 player market is different, and i don't see MS throwing 4 billion at this one. But ipod are old, everyone knows about them, and they don't take the competition seriously because they've usually never heard of the company. When they see this on the market, people will be curious. I personally think the Zen Vision M could have done loads better if they could afford the marketing Apple can. Now the Zune is very similar in the fact that it can compete with the ipod, and MS can actually afford to market it properly.
The difference is, in this case, there are still many other non-insignificant players in the DAP arena (Cowon, iRiver, Creative, and many more) that are far superior to the Zune and the iPod as well. From how I look at it, the Zune is inferior to the iPod technologically; the only reason I think it's going to survive is because it's backed by Microsoft's $$$. I'll wait until the next generation of ZUne, which is being developed entirely in-house by Microsoft (this Zune coming out is made by Toshiba).
