Zune 30 or a 30 gig Ipod video?

The touch wheel interface on the iPod is much much better than anything else. Do you want to use a stupid little dpad to navigate your music, or an intuitive wheel? You'd have to be insane to punish yourself with a Zune.

The screen is better/bigger than an iPod, so video is improved. The iPod has a billion gadgets that it connects to, whereas the Zune market penetration is nowhere near that level, so if you want to hook it up in your car, that's something to consider.

I'd go with the Zune personally.

I use my Zune in my car, no problem at all.

KT

How do you connect it? Are you using an aftermarket deck and connecting a 1/8" to RCA cable, or some other solution?

Heh, well I still have a tape deck in my car, so I use the old tape player plugged into the deck, plugged into the headphone jack thing. Then I have a Zune car charger to keep it powered. I know that probably won't work for a lot of people these days and I probably should have clarified in my original post.

I've had both and the wheel is no more or less intuitive than the touch pad for the Zune. In fact I prefer the Zune pad, though I still liked the Gigabeat's navigation the best.

I guess they are relatively similar. The Gigabeat was designed in concert with Microsoft IIRC, but then Microsoft went off and did the Zune and left the Gigabeat to rot.

That's no good. I want to hook my Zune up in my car, but I don't think my deck supports it. I need to find one that does and get it installed. Doesn't help that I have a Buick, so you have to take off the entire front panel to install a stereo; fucking GM.

-EDIT- I should add, I don't have a tape deck, just a CD player.

I use my Dell DJ Pocket in my car. Anything with a head phone (usually any MP3 player will have one 😉 ) can be connected to my stereo system. I don't get the big deal about buying the iPod only connector.

Cheaper than the other options (my 16 GB was $200), smaller, flash memory, SD expansion slot, awesome interface/software, FM tuner, built in microphone, better screen resolution by far. Screen doesn't scratch easily either.

Edit: Oh, nvm. Just read the op. 😱 Zune FTW! My iPod video broke down after a year.

I had a 30GB Zen for a few weeks (I'm a bit of an MP3 player junkie) and it kept breaking down. Returned it twice, then on the third try I gave up and got a Gigabeat S60.

The player seemed nice enough overall, the screen was very nice, but it was a little clunky and just didn't have the capacity I needed anyway.

Aye, this is one of the pitfalls of having an ipod dominated market, it makes it more difficult for us non-ipod users to get things like this done. It would be nice if there was a universal way of connecting to the car aside from having a tape deck.

I got the AV dock kit, placed it on top of the dash, got a car charger kit (the kind with the USB plug) and plugged it into the radio though the AUX plug; it works great! I love the remote for when I have other people in the car so they can find something they like, I can see the screen with a quick glance, it stays in the dock surprisingly well even on bumpy dirt roads, and when I get out of the car I just grab my Zune and go.

The Zune software is? Ok. It still needs some work but for the most part you can get your music on the device without too much cursing. My only gripes about the Zune are with its lack of codec support, I would like more video formats supported and more lossless format support.

There are people working on getting Linux on the Zune but that make take a while so I wouldn?t hold my breath.

zune needs unicode support, it's ridiculous that it doesn't have it yet. go diaf zune team.
being stuck with a hacked downgraded firmware zune30 is sad times.

it's pathetic that my ancient creative zen xtra and some cheapo near FAR 1gb player support asian(chinese/korean/japanese) characters but my zune doesn't

Support for non-english language character sets, like Chinese and Japanese. I guess that uhohs has a Manga or Anime collection with foreign titles that would look like a scrambled mess on a unhacked Zune.

Personally, I like my iPod better than my Zune. The Zune has cooler features like WiFi sharing and video, but I never tend to use them. Even after the software updates, I still have the occasional library sync issue with the Zune as well.

I see a lot of people say this, but why? I don't get it.

Edit: This is in the wrong forum by the way.

it does what I need...what more can I ask for?

Well that's a reason to find it adequate, not to love it. There are probably a tonne of applications that do what you need, I thought maybe there was something special about itunes to set it apart.

KT

Just use iTunes to copy music over, but if you want to manage your media library, you should be using other software. Even WMP is ages better.

This goes for every device out there. The wheel destroys whatever there is out there.... well save for the iPod touch interface.

Whatever the iTunes lovers are smoking, I never want to try it. iTunes is the worst piece of software I have EVER used.

I think I'm going to end up trying something similar. I'm hoping my head unit has an AUX in (Alpine 9883, I think, though I'd have to double-check). My only concern is that I've read that some people tried linking devices through the AUX in on their Alpine units and the device wasn't recognized. I don't want to pay Car Toys 100 bucks to crack open my stereo just to tell me it can't be done, and due to GM's shitty design (which requires removing the entire front instrument panel to take out the stereo), I really, really don't want to do it myself.

I'll have to bite the bullet at some point. Maybe I'll just say "fuck it" and try it on my own tonight; if it doesn't work, Car Toys isn't too far out of my way...
