A good deal, but you've gotta be cautious about the 30 GB zune. This was Microsoft's first entry into the MP3 player business, and this model is littered with problems, including screen crackings when the battery behind it has been charging for too long...

Congrats Sawyer on yours lasting for two years. That has not been my experience. Two-three years ago there was a Hot Deal going on about this time for refurbished Zune 30s. I got three of them for my adult children for Christmas presents. All were treated gently, but each had to be returned to Microsoft for repairs or replacement-one was replaced at least twice. By now all three are dead (including their warranty replacements). I don't think I would go near these again.

Two out of my three from that re-furb deal from a couple of years ago are still going. The only one that died was dropped by my youngest, killing the drive.

What? I've had mine for about two years now, and besides the idiotic bug they had with Zunes freezing when synced at the beginning of the year, it has been absolutely fine. I love it.

I am very happy that you haven't had the misfortune of a defective zune, and do not take me for a Apple fanboy or anything, I do have a 2nd generation (2 years) 80 GB Zune which I absolutely love. However, I know a handful of people within my social contacts and countless others after searching on google who have complained about the screen cracking.

Personally I never heard of or experienced the screen cracking problem. Ours all locked up or went haywire. Additional problems were chargers going bad. The end of the year problem only happens at the start of leap years and is solved on January 1st, but is a very embarassing coding problem for the largest software company in the world.

I wouldn't absolutely say don't buy-but only because of the great warranty bacdking by Microsoft. Too bad because the audio and video qualities are first rate.

I have an early run Zune 30gig and play music and podcasts on it all the time. Ive put tons of hours on mine without an issue its very solid. There was the leap year where you couldnt use it for that one day but fine and dandy hours later.

I use it on long trips with the kids converting movies over to it that I can play back through the LCD screens in the van. The only downside to that is when you tell it to output the video it turns off the screen. Which if you think about it makes sense if your outputting the video chances are you dont need the zune screen on.

I would like a new one but like and need are different mine is still rockin.

I also never heard of the screen crack issue. My battery still lasts through 3 hours of podcasting video also and I have run the sucker down to nothing several times where I didnt think it would come back. But an overnight USB charge and sync and it was good to go again.

I and my brother both have a 30GB and it's fantastic, never had any problems, etc. Even if something were to happen, it's very easy and cheap to repair yourself.

This is the first I've heard of the screen cracking as well. Mine gets knocked around a fair bit, as I have to put it in rather precarious locations in my car at work (FM reception is not so great in the CV) and it has a tendency to fall during abrupt driving. :p It still works great (30gb refurb). I have had to send a 4gb back to Microsoft after it wouldn't sync.

I have never had a problem with mine either (Zune 30gb, got it when it came out)... Although it has a DEEP gouge in it from being slammed into a sharp metal point (track that the passenger seat slid forward and backward on) during some intense driving.

Same here, had this almost 2 years now without so much as a glitch. Use in in my Fusion with SYNC and it always works (knocks).
