Hi guys, i know this board is old but i would really like to reach 4.0 with my E8500. I can reach to 3.7 just by changing the FSB but after that i get no video. it will boot but its like the display is not getting any power. So i went in and attempted to change cpu vcore as well as memory volts, but when changed in the bios they do not show any change in windows via cpuz etc. Anyone OC with a zotac before? any help would be great. thanks.

If my memory is correct the nvidia chipset sucks for overclocking. You can't crank up the FSB much with that board as you don't have alot of bios options available.

Your biggest problem really is the chip your using as it's native bus speed is 1333mhz. If you were to swap with a chip that had a 1066mhz bus speed then you'd be able to push the chip much further....Of course it would be chip specific as to how high you could go.

Yes and no. For overall performance a higher FSB is better. If you compare chips at equal clocks.

For overclocking a chip with a motherboard that the FSB craps out at 390 for example the chip with the lowest stock FSB will have higher overclocking potential as long as the chip is capable of it.

I'll make some example chips with nice round numbers that are easier to follow.

Chip A 3.0ghz 1333(bus speed) = 333fsb x _9.0(multiplier) so 390fsb x 9 = 3.5ghz(max)
Chip B 2.8ghz 1066(bus speed) = 266fsb x 10.5(multiplier) so 390fsb x 10.5 = 4ghz(max)
Chip C 2.7ghz _800(bus speed) = 200fsb x 13.5(multiplier) so 390fsb x 13.5 = 5ghz(max)

So im looking at a p5n that has 1066 and 1333. would that get me higher results?

You mean a Asus P5N motherboard? If so nvidia chipsets isn't too good for overclocking.

Not sure if the extra mhz would be worth getting another motherboard for the E8500

Your best bet is save up for another cpu/mb/mem combo.

If you could find a cheap but decent P45 chipset based motherboard you'd have better overclocking luck most likely.
