Interesting. Our current taboo against this behavior is entirely cultural, and according to the Wikipedia article, probably derives from the Catholic Church in the Middle Ages.

See? This is what would happen if the Internet suddenly disappeared - before you know it, people would start feeding peasants to lions, and pets wouldn't just be for companionship. They'd be for "wink-wink-nudge-nudge-companionship."

Humans are really f'ed up critters.

Under the Asia section, the first picture on the right labeled "The Dream of the Fisherman's Wife" seems to be the origin from which the tentacle pr0n seen today is derived...at least it would make sense if it was.

Yawn.

Just think of it as current culture being at a queer nadir, sure to return the natural ways eventually.

Roman Games and Circus

Beast fighters, known as bestiarii, fighting wild animals at the Roman Games, relief from EUR Museum

The most explicit recorded incidents of public sex involving humans and animals activity are associated with the murderous sadism, torture and rape of the Roman games and circus, in which it is estimated that several hundreds of thousands died. Masters reports: "Beasts were specially trained to copulate with women: if the girls or women were unwilling then the animal would attempt rape. A surprising range of creatures was used for such purposes - bulls, giraffes, leopards, cheetahs, wild boar, zebras, stallions, jackasses, huge dogs, apes, etc. The beasts were taught how to copulate with a human being [whether male or female] either via the vagina or via the anus." Representations of scenes from the sexual lives of the gods, such as Pasiphaë and the Bull, were highly popular, often causing extreme suffering, injury or death. On occasion, the more ferocious beasts were permitted to kill and (if desired) devour their victims afterwards.

Chimpanzees and mandrills, both in fact ferocious and very powerful species of primate: "made drunk by wine and inflamed by the odor of females of their kind, were loosed upon girls whose genitals had been drenched with the urine of female chimps and mandrills." The victims were often virgins and not infrequently young children. One spectacle is said to have included "a hundred tiny blonde girls being raped simultaneously by a horde of baboons."

In case anyone is wondering what inspired me to look this up, I was watching Rome (the HBO drama), and this comes up in the scene between Cassius and the King of Bythinia. It's definitely the funniest scene in the whole series.

Cassius: Please bear in mind your excellency that those that help us now will have good friends in Rome when Mark Antony the traitor is deposed. Very good friends.

King: There are Roman women who are fucked by baboons.

Cassius: ...Excuse me?

King: I've heard there are shows where such things can be seen.

Cassius: They're not shows so much really. They're more a punishment.

King: I should like to see that. We do not have such in Bythinia.

Cassius: I should imagine it's simply a matter of training the baboons.

King: We have no baboons here -- no apes of any kind.

Cassius: I wasn't aware of that. So, as I say, those who help us now-

King: Yes, you want my money to raise an army; I want to see a Roman woman fucked by baboons.

Cassius: ...Perhaps arrangements can be made.
