Zoom lense reccomendations

ive been doing a little bit of research, learned the lens i was looking at (270$ @ ritz) 75-300m f4.5 Canon lens gives slightly soft pictures. i read around, trying to find other, reasonably priced lenses that could give my father a nice picture quality (in reality, thats me, but its for "him")

we still have the 18-55mm Kit lense that comes with the rebel, but my dad would like something that will allow him to zoom in more.

Ive noticed a lot of the cheaper lenses either give soft images, severe vignetting, or some other form of incorrect picture recording just due to the fact that they are cheaper.

some of the lenses i am now looking at are the
Sigma 55-200mm f4-5.6DC lens (190 online)
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Zoom Macro Super II (210 online)
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Macro Super II (150 online)

Now, those are the lenses i am looking at, the 70-300's seem to also have a very nice macro mode with the Super II having a 1:2 ratio on macro mode.

Just wondering if you guys have any other suggestions. We are looking to keep below $300. Its still a novice camera and we would like to keep the prices under control for the current time being.

MIKE

I hope this helps ... I would recommend the 70-200 F4 L It's reported to be among the best of lenses especially for the money $600 less if bought used at the first two links I provided

I would also advise that you check out www.adorama.com ... one of a couple of well respected online photo shops.

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Zoom Macro Super II

This and the 50 mm F1.8 from canon are the two lenses i have to supplement my digital rebel.

The sigma 70-300 is a great lens, although a little slow to focus. but i've gotten lots of great shots with it.

Also, buy it from deltainternational.com. they have it for $177

I have the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Macro Super II and it is slow to focus and requires a lot of light, obviously. I like it though, especially for the price I paid.

the Sigma 70-300 super macro II is the best one in that range, its slow but all of the f/4.5-5.6 lenses are,

you could just save some money and shoo for teh Canon 70-200 f/4L well worth the 600$ it costs

The Canon 70-200f4 is nice. 🙂 What are you taking pictures of that require zoom? The 70-200 is a lot of zoom on the 300D.

If you're not strictly looking for zoom lenses, I'd suggest the 50f1.8 as the next lens to get. Fast, good AND cheap.

For more suggestions and comments, I'd suggestion www.dpreview.com and visit their Lens forums.

Looks like I was wrong when I said the question could be better answered in other forums.
