Nice... I've got one of these, they are solid, almost as good as Courier V.Everything...

ok there seem to be lot of modem users here.

Any knows which external modem supports wake on ring option ???

I need to power up my machine on a ring, I wonder if there is a 28.8 or 33.6k modem which can do this.

Loneshadow, AFAIK you will only get such capabilities with an internal modem. Motherboards supporting Wake On Ring have a special header on the motherboard

Has anyone received their GVC modem yet? If so what software is included?

I have the same exact modem for a few years now. Win 2k recognizes it with no problem, no drivers needed. It performed flawlessly till I had I upgraded to cable, and still functions as a faxmodem when needed. Plus it's external, that's a free slot inside. I had to call Zoom tech support once and they were great. This is a pretty good deal imo.

<< If you only use an external modem occasionally as a broadband backup or for faxing, Andara has a 33.6
modem for $12.

They have it on sale for $2.00 but ground shipping is $10.51:(

Actually, the external modem I was originally referring to is OOS. The Cardinal unit for $2 doesn't come with a manual (yawn) or AC adapter. The copy doesn't mention whether it comes with a serial cable (and an email to them asking whether the previous Hayes 33.6 modem had a serial cable went unanswered).
Actually, from all you can tell from the Andara copy, the Cardinal modem could be a USB software jobbie, though that is unlikely.

damn this seems like a good deal for the zoom modem, everyone seems to have a positive experience with their tech support (gotta love nice, reliable tech support). Anyone know where u can pick up a cheap serial cable that u can use with the zoom modem?

Now for a slightly off-topic question: 56k is great, but is there ever a possiblity to increase the speed of a modem past 56k without using a 112k dual modem?

:)I just installed my refurbed Zoom modem in Windows XP. 52.0 kbps! This unit had a few smudges that I wiped off with a rag- otherwise it looks brand new.
I've done three hot deals that really made a difference. The BB Black Friday Visiontek video card, the OM Cendyne (Lite-On) CD-Burner, and this modem.
Me so happy!

For those of you who took advantage of this and received the Zoom model 2949L external faxmodem:

Try this at your own risk. I've done it, and it worked great for me, but that doesn't guarantee your success. And if you happen to fry your modem, please don't jump all over me. However, if you want a little adventure in your life.....

The "L" in the Zoom model denotes a modem using a Lucent LT chipset. If yours doesn't have a "L" in the model, don't try this or you'll definitely destroy your modem as it probably has a Rockwell chipset.

The specific Lucent chipset used in the 2949L appears to be the Venus chipset. This V.90 chipset just happens to support V.92 firmware.

Now for the hot deal within the hot deal.....

Go to the Zoom website at

Zoom External V92 Faxmodem

Download the following files:

3049.exe - Drivers for Windows 95/98/ME/2000
or 3049XP.exe - Drivers for Windows XP
3049MOH.exe

Run the file 3049.exe (or 3049XP.exe if you are running WINXP) -- they are self-extracting archives. Make a note of the location of these files as you'll need them later.

Run the 3049MOH.EXE file (also a self-extracting archive). VERY CAREFULLY follow the instructions and run the flash software. This will flash your 2949L to the 3049L firmware (hence the danger of destroying your modem).

Once you are finished, reboot Windows as prompted.

If everything works correctly, Windows will magically find a Zoom V.92 modem connected to your system and prompt you for a driver. Click on Cancel, then open explorer and go to the folder where you saved the contents of 3049.exe/3049XP.exe. Run the appropriate setup program. I'd then reboot the system to be safe.

Voila, you now are the proud owner of a Zoom V.92 compatible modem for $24.95 +shipping and the cost of a serial cable. When you reboot, you should also gain an applet running in your taskbar to control the v.92 functions for modem hold and call waiting.

I think that this makes the deal much hotter than previously considered.

I bought the same modem off eBeigh a few weeks ago. Had to get rid of my old USB modem because it was incompatible with WinXP. Anyway--the ZOOM 2949L installed very easily. WinXP recognized the modem and had its own drivers, so I didn't need any software from ZOOM at all. I'm currently connecting at speeds of between 45K and 49K. Very happy with the modem. Good find, except for the absence of the serial cable.

(Edited to specify that I bought the "L" model.)

I use it and have put them on a few clients Puters as we live out in the Country and have been hitting speeds typically @ 49.2K to 51K. Software that comes with it are drivers (no XP but the 2K work) and Bitware Fax. The company is located in Canada and the Modem is from China...

Steltek,

I have the 2949L, actually I have had this for years. Yes, the L version has a Venus chipset. If the trick you describe works, you are THE MAN !
That would be awesome. Do you have any links to show that it actually worked for people ?

Thanks!

I picked up a couple of Zoom 3048 external modems at Staples--one is for sale on For Sale/Trade thread. If you don't like the price, pm me maybe we can work something out.
