Every so often the ZoneAlarm i'm using will stop I.E from getting access to the internet, other applications i.e Azeurus, MSN etc still work but I.E doesn't, i have to close it to be able to browse. Or restart the computer. This doesn't happen all the time, but generally when i've been away from the computer for a few hours... Its getting quite frustrating.

Does anyone have any ideas as to whats happening?

I'm running XP Pro with ZoneAlarm version 6.1.744.001

Any Help Appreciated..

I know from experience that, after upgrading the Zone Alarm software, it will usually throw out a pop-up icon in the lower right corner of the desktop asking if I want to allow it to let Outlook Express to have access to the internet, or IE, or a game, or basically anything that is trying to send a signal "out". Sometimes in my haste, I have almost clicked "No" to a particular app and caught myself at the last moment. If I click "No", then that game or whatever can't get through the firewall.

Do you remember if you might have done this with IE? I also know that sometimes the best way to fix something is to uninstall it then reinstall after a reboot. Then be very careful when it throws out those pop-ups.

Yea uninstalling and reinstalling might be an idea actually, i've been saying that to myself for a while but never got round to it.

I see what you're saying but it doesnt really explain why it works all day then after a few hours i come back and it doesn't, thats whats confusing me..

Are you closing IE & then later starting it & ZA won't allow it to connect? Is IE set to have access or is ZA for some reason overriding your settings?

If you want to have IE to access Internet without re install ZA again is to delete everything on ZA's Program Control Program tab also delete everything from components tab then it will start asking you for access permission so be careful to answer yes or no to each application like IE you will be ok.

From what I have read---zone alarm is not all that bad of a firewall but its main downside is that its a very bad resource hog---and qualifies as bloatware. On a very fast system the tax may be not all that much--but on not so fast systems---bloatware becomes a big handicap.

So one option that should always be on the table is switching firewalls---and I finally chucked my non bloatware firewall and decided to go with comodo pro.---at the price of free and the rave reviews the comodo gets---you might want to check it out. Learning a new firewall is always a pain---but so is reconfiguring zone alarm.
