Zonealarm pop ups?? better choice?

Zonealarm's website is moderated, so impossible to be critical of the product, and the support is *very* poor.

Since installing the new version, every few hours I get a box that pops up to say:

thanks for choosing the worlds #1 firewall
join our community
like us on facebook
etc

HOW DO I STOP THIS?
Any ideas?

OR, is there a better free firewall? Another machine uses PC Tool Firewall Plus and the seems ok..

I should point out that when you ask a question on Zonealarm's page, the answer you get is "call tech support". It turns out tech support is not actual ZA's support at all. It's actually Iyogi, which you can read many bad things about online.

The first thing they do is collect tons of info on you - next step is they want remote access to your machine. Bad.

I just asked the question. They immediately wanted access. I said no, and they called me back later to ask for it again. I stills said no, and eventually they had me look at event viewer. Once I did, and saw some warnings they insisted that remote access was the only way they could help. In reality these warnings has nothing to do with any possible issues with ZA, but that didn't matter to the "tech".

This was all about trying to sell me a support package.
Zonealarm should be embarrassed by this tactic.

Uninstall it and demand a refund, that is a huge red flag.

I used ZA years ago, actually liked it but haven't used it in 3 -4 years now as it was becoming bloatware, but nothing like you describe.

Windows firewall and MSE have matured to the point they do a good job, for free, and without popups.

As far as I recall the best firewall for XP was the freeware version of Kerio v215.

Search around might be you can find it somewhere.

On nearly every machine that I've worked on, that had ZoneAlarm on it, and was crashing/hanging, uninstalling ZoneAlarm solved the problems.

I think it is a buggy, bloated, POS.
