I have a server pc with my internet connection setup on it. Then i use ICS so all the pc's at my house can share the internet connetion. Do i need to just install zonealarm on the server pc, or should i install it on all the pc's?

oh... you probably want a good reason why I think it sucks...

1) I work with it every day
2) I have to tell atleast one person that Zone Alarm has fscked up their computer every day
3) I have to watch 90% my firewall-blocking-external-connection calls turn out to be Zone Alarm's free software every day (other 10% is the sh!tbag called Black Ice)

I'm really tired and lazy, so I won't continue. I'm gonna go curl up on the floor under my cube and go to sleep or something.

Goodnight.

Shouldnt the OS keep programs from screwing everything up?

Poor administration by ignorant users.

I have it installed on all of my network rigs and it works like a dream, absolutely no problems. Having it installed on all PCs and not just the gateway will also blocked unsolicited outgoing traffic, so you should have it there too. Shelling out a few bucks for the Pro version is definitely worth it, but you'll get by with the free version as well.

Two coincidences? I don't think so. Besides, Zone Alarm farks up on all of them. I refuse to believe that every single call I get every day is a coicidence.

Ack... you guys are almost as bad as the religious. Pro is worth it. The free version is NOT.

I never mentioned coincidence. I just think general lusers out there are idiots. I never had problems with zone alarm for the short time I used it. I do agree that TPF is much better though.

Wow - I've never had any problems with Zone Alarm (Pro). I bought it at the end of May and it's been running smooth ever since. The Pro version is much better than the free one, though. A couple of notes that I've noticed - don't bother with the ad-blocker, it sucks (IMHO) - it slows browsing way down for me.

...

Wow - I just checked out TPF2's online manual. That looks very nice, informative & configurable. I might just switch over to it. Too bad I didn't know about this a few months ago...

Don't even bother with the free edition, you can't use ICS with it anyway.

Uhh, yes you can. I have!

I have had zonealarm installed well over a year and the only problem i've ran into is starting up a new game and zone alarm pops up and then crashes the game.

So back to my question, do i need to worry about putting zonealarm on each pc or just the server? I'm not really paranoid about getting hacked or anything, but it is naive to think having some sort of protection is not necessary with broadband.

If you're paranoid, you can put it on each PC. Since the computer that you're ICS'ing from is acting as a server, you can drop the software on the server itself and have that computer watch it's connection sharing. it's just like using one computer to connect to a router that connects to a cable modem. 🙂

I must be the exception to the rule. I use 4 computers here at home running off of a Linksys cable/dsl router and have ZA freeware running on each with NO problems for the entire time I have had them.

P.S. And I use WinME on all machines ...and again....problemless now for 1 and a half years.

One of my best friends uses WinME w/ Zone Alarm's freeware with no problems as well. Big whoop.
