Zone Alarm and SETI?

I thought I read somewhere that someone had trouble using Zone Alarm along with SETI. Does it affect work unit times at all. Is there anything I should be aware of? I haven't been running a firewall and I decided it was about time I got one installed.

Thanks 🙂

I did a little checking on the Web and the only thing I could find regarding this is regarding a setting in Zone Alarm that allows you disable Internet access when the screen-saver kicks in... if you were running the GUI version of the S@H client, that could be a problem if the client needed to download/upload data while the screensaver is running. 😉

Aside from that issue, I haven't run across any other problems.

I've been using SETI and ZoneAlarm for a long time, and haven't had any issues. In fact SETI is the only thing allowed to pass when ZA is "locked". 😀

As far as the time hit goes, never timed it with or without ZA. However, I prefer to run ZA for peace of mind. So if I have to sacrifice a couple of minutes of WU time for PC security, it's worth it. 🙂

Old Discussion

Agree with Ray... I have a notebook with ZA and SETI running and haven't seen any slowdowns or other problems. It just runs... 🙂

And LyNx... no FW???? For shame!!! 😛

I remember a thread a while back about WU times with and without ZA. The times with were higher than the times without.

I've never been able to get a PC stable with ZA running myself. My home XP box does random reboots with ZA installed. Uninstalled it and "poof", no more reboots. I'd rather have a hardware cable/dsl router anyway. 🙂

I think ZA versions pre- 2.6 are OK, versions after that have given me nightmares (slow access to web etc).

cheers,

Col

When I have Zone Alarm or Norton's Personal Firewall, my average WU time actually jumped >= 10mins.

Now if you want to pay for a software firewall, please consider getting a router with firewall. Routers are cheap now-a-days at ~$45. And I couldn't figure out how to make the free Zona Alaram work with win32's internet sharing thing.

I was able to get ZA to work with ICS under Win2KPro, but it wasn't stable. If I wanted to make a change to the network, I had to jump through hoops.

From what I remember, I had to disable ZA (including services) Get ICS working, re-enable ZA, and then go into ZA and under the Advanced Security, set the network (and maybe each PC) as a trusted zone.

As I said, it would work for awhile, but any little change would upset the apple cart, and I would have to redo it. I finally got tired of messing with it, and bought a Linksys router/switch when they went on sale with a mail in rebate. That solved my network issues. 🙂

How do I set it so it will allow the computers on my network to transmit workunits to the queue? It keeps blocking them?

I exited ZoneAlarm and I still can't transmit. I've been having more trouble transmitting lately than a monkey trying to fvck a football :disgust:

Make sure that the internal network is on Medium security settings, and is in the Local Zone

Make sure that you allow SetiQueue to run as a Server (under Program Control), and that on the clients you allow setiathome.3.03-winnt-cmdline (or close enough for trying to remember it off the top of my head 😉) to allow connections to the network/internet 🙂

Make sure you don't set an IP/subnet mask on SetiQueue itself, set them all to 0.0.0.0 (i found if you put stuff here it will be a PITA)

Hope some of these help 🙂

Confused

ZA does slow SETI down for me, by about an hour out of 12 or more. I only leave it on while connected to the net, though I'm finally getting wireless this week. 🙂

Does XP even allow/need a separate firewall?

It keeps blocking me from sending on my other computers. On the one the firewall is installed on it works fine, I tried all the stuff you told me to do Confused.

I don't have a queue installed on my network. Maybe my post was misleading. In theory, could I download seti queue and install it on this computer, and then have the other computers on my network transmit to this computer, and then send them on to someone else's queue?

Just an idea.

Okay, are the other computers in your "local zone" and is its security set lower than high?

The network is in the local zone, so i'm assuming the computers are too.

Internet security = High
Local security = Medium

The firewall has blocked Internet access to mysterymachine.no-ip.com (204.71.108.117) (HTTPS) from your computer [TCP Flags: S].

That is the message Zone Alarm is giving me.

IIRC, even though you exited ZoneAlarm, I think that there is a service that still runs you have to stop. I'm not at home so I can't check on it.

I've run ZA with & without ZA ,havent noticed any changes in WU time.

Yes🙂
You need to put trusted IP numbers or ranges (your PC's) in Zones to allow SETI to connect to your Q

Ass1 beat me to it, I think. The computers in the Local Zone have to be entered manually. Look for a button on the security levels page.

Try closing Zone Alarm, and also close VSMON.EXE (this is what Ray was looking for 😉)

If this fixes the problem, then ZA is the problem, if not, there is some other problem which we need to attend to 🙂

Confused

W2k pro, setiqueue, vnc, noip, seti cmdline, ics on a ADSL connection for my home network, Antivir and ZA are running 24/7 on my gateway machine with no prob.

Once correctly setup, ZA runs smoothly and takes no CPU. 🙂

1) setup your computer without ZA.
2) If all is OK then install ZA and configure it as you want.

As Ken said your local network has to be a trusted zone and on medium security. With high security ICS doesn't work.
