zOMG! I just dropped and broke a 45W CFL.

Man, when a person in our company broke a mercury thermometer, they called in Hazmat right away. They even threw away his clothes lol.

In short, you're boned.

The correct thing to do is leave the room for a while. Mercury evaporates pretty easily. Deal with the pieces in a few hours.

ROFL people are way too cautious. I had no clue there was any inherent danger in breaking flourescent bulbs. I used to do it for fun at work.

ah, I remember playing with mercury when I was a kid. After a thermometer breaks, there's my mom, the registered nurse, showing us how cool mercury is, the way it slides across the ground when you push it with paper. My dad, the Biologist, concurring all the way.

Fun times.

They do have mercury in them, after all. It's good to be careful. You'll be fine after breaking one, just don't handle it with your bare hands 😛

the vapour form is supposed to be a lot worse for you than the liquid...

It's mercury vapor... not liquid.
It's already gone.

There's not nearly as much mercury in them as there used to be.

Don't worry, you won't die.

 Too late for that.

I don't get why they don't encase them all with a hard plastic shield like Ikea. They could even integrate it as the packaging...
