Zombies will still eat freshly dead meat. He can put the bullet in his friend's brain and make a break for it. They'll stop to eat, but his friend won't get up and come after him.

Mercenary has it right. You always need to be mindful of both short term survival (casting off your slow comrade) and long term survival (putting a bullet in his head so he doesn't add to the zombie population).

I typically have 1000 rds on hand in every caliber. =D
It's just a hobby for me, and cheaper and more convenient to buy ammo by the case, but definately prepared for zombies if the need should arise.
The sniper rifle is a custom .300 Win Mag that can shoot probably 1/4 MOA (all shots within 3/4" circle at 300 yds)

Load up on food and have supplies ready to barricade yourself, and you're set for pretty much any minor outbreak.

Here's my basic plan:
Grab a Jeep Wrangler and load it up with supplies (ammo, food, etc). Why a Wrangler? Because they're proven, durable, off-road vehicles with better gas mileage than most SUVs or pickup trucks. Not to mention that they're somewhat easy to find.
Take the loaded Jeep and drive to a warehouse or storage facility. These types of buildings have few windows, easily securable entry points, and are structurally sound. Not to mention they have a lot of space for storage and high visibility.
Now on to weapons. I would grab a .22 hunting rifle, Glock 9mm, and a K-Bar. The .22 is fairly accurate, the ammo is extremely plentiful and easy to find (just raid any respectable Walmart or sporting goods store) and it's a fairly light weapon. The Glock has been proven as a near indestructible sidearm, and the 9mm ammo is easy to find and packs a mediocre punch. The K-Bar is for close-quarters work, and it's been proven a durable and effective weapon.
Now it's time to gather miscellaneous supplies. Grab several large Rubbermaid containers and start filling them up. Food and medical supplies first, everything else second. After you have supplies, gank a generator from a hardware store and go fill up a couple gas canisters at your local gas station before the power goes out and the pumps die.
Can't think of anything else right now... this should be a sufficient start.

i still think the best protection is a large field cleared with a large fort in the middle with multipe gun towers and a moat or two surrounding it and then a mine field followed by that razor wire the army uses....with maybe an obstacle field after that
this way you can spot the zombies from a distance... and sniper them as they try to get across the moat, minefield and through the razor wire.

problem i see is that eventually there will be so many dead zombies that the razor wire and moat will be useless. they will just fill the moat and climb over and climb over the dead stuck on razor wire.

explosives under the moat to blow away everything. Also shaped charges along the walls of the fort to blow away the bodies piling up at the wall. Of course the chances of such a nicely designed fort are the same as the one you'll find a military bunker...

Sounds like something a Zombie would say...a Zombie spy perhaps?

Gnomes were stealing Tweaks' underwear. I remember there was some essay about why a big corporation like Starbucks was bad for small coffee businesses, and the kids were all hyped up on coffee.
As I recall, their business plan was:
1.) Steal underwear
2.) ......
3.) Profit!
That pesky Step 2 was what they just hadn't quite worked out.
your going to have fuel for all of that? consistently?Originally posted by: mwmorph
How come no one would just drive straight to the major military closest base? I know for sure I'd jsut go to Quantico, one of the largest US Marine Corps bases in the world. It houses 12,000 personell and if recent conflicts show mean anything, US forces have more than 100 to 1 kill ratios against insurgents, whom are (somewhat arguably) more capable than slow zombies.
12,000 M4s/tanks/Armoured HMMWVs with 50 cals/Fighter jets manned by them ost capable force on the planet should be able ot hold out against zombies with something like an 10,000 to 1 kill ratio or even better. Screw the zombies, screw cars, screw bicycles, lets seem them try to bite through an M1-A2 Abrams with Chobam composite armour. Also I'm sure Quantico has tens of millions of rounds of ammunition. More by far than the 5 million people/zombies that live in all of VA.
Need some food? Just drive a few squads in armoured hummvees to the closest wal mart and pick up some chicken noodle soup/ramen/pizzas.
