Zippo flame is HUGE... trim the wick to make it smaller?

Do you trim the wick shorter to reduce the size of the flame? Almost burn my eyebrows off lighting a cigarette. :D I have it trimmed as all the instructions I've seen say... trim it even with the top of the chimney... still about a 2 inch high flame...

Yeah, but I believe you can pull it back down to shorten it, rather than having to cut it.

He must be using a fluid lighter, not gas. It has a fibrous-like sponge thats below the wick right?

you should be able to pull the wick back down rather than cutting it. you should only have to cut the wick if/when you end up with it burned with an extra 'mass' on the end

That reminds me of college... I had a room mate who was a little bit "slow." He bought a Zippo cause he saw mine and thought it was cool... he wanted a bigger flame, so he figured, what burns better than ligher fluid? Well hell... gasoline of course! LMAO!!! It was definately a big flame... he ended up dropping it on the ground... trying to stomp out the flame. So his nice Busch Light Zippo looked kinda burnt and was all scratched up the day he got it, lol. I think he paid $40 for the ligher and a bottle of fluid... he went through that bottle of fluid in about 2 weeks... couldn't leave the lighter alone. Kept lighting it and leaving it lit until it was too hot to hold. When it wouldn't work anymore, he'd refill it, and a few times he'd fill it, light it, and set it on the table and see how long the fluid lasted.

This is the same kid who bought 5 lbs of ground beef, made 4 hamburgers out of it... burned the living crap out of one side, left the other side raw, took one bite and said "sick" and threw the rest away.

*EDIT* I forgot I packed them away with some stuff and I don't feel like digging them out =) Nothing real special... just one my uncle gave me from when he was in the Navy... a plain one my dad gave me that his dad gave him. And an Oldsmobile one that my dad got me when I was all excited about fixing up my Cutlass Supreme... till I learned what it costs :)

No, no, no. Don't cut the wick. You don't need to make it shorter for shorter flame. Cutting it level with the top of the chimney, or top of the striker wheel, gives best results. Any shorter, and it becomes not nearly as wind resistant as it should be. Yes, you can adjust the flame on a Zippo like on a crappy disposable lighter. Get some tweezers, or a small pocket knife, and adjust the wick position. Moving the wick closer to the striker wheel will make the flame smaller. Moving the wick away from the wheel will make the flame bigger.

Also, the flame is always higher, and more aggressive than usual, within the first day or two after refilling. Don't soak, or overfill or your zippo will ironically dry out faster causing more frequent refilling. Count 6 or 7 Mississippi's when refilling from bone dry.

I realized that when I decided to reply. This thread is on a common Google question selection thing. That's how I found it. Figured I'd post a reply with correct info and tips on the subject for anybody else wondering the same thing.

Misunderstanding on your part, they are talking about your lifetime. They kill you whenever you try to claim warranty.
