.zip file appear as folders

.zip files are appearing as folders in windows explorer. I would like them appear as just files and not appear in the folders window I keep open on the left of windows explorer.
Operating system is WIN XP

yeah that's one of the features in winxp. just install winzip or 7-zip and set it to manage .zip files.

It didn't work and the files won't even open with Winzip when I double click them. I have to right click and "open with winzip".
When I check file types it is set to open with winzip.

I found that if I am clicking the zip file inthe FOLDER window it doesn't open with winzip. If I click the zip file in the right hand file window it opens with winzip.

You can try start->run
REGSVR32 /U ZIPFLDR.DLL

OK now the zip doesn't open from the folder window. But it still appears in the folder window.

You can change the icon to something else if you really want... all files are going to appear as something.

Yes I know that all files appear as something. The thing I don't want is the ZIP appearing in the folders window. No other files appear in that window only actual directories. I don't see exe files in the folder window. If I have a zip directory I don't want all the zip files files appearing in the folder window I want then to appear in the right hand window only as files in the zip directory.
