i finally got my computer set back up in my room, and i needed to get all my files off the old one onto it. It took me like 4.5 hours to transfer less than 3 hundred meg:(. this bites i was really looking forward to some CS. Although it is somewhat better than d/l'ing all that crap again. I would be seriously tempted to wring the neck of the dumb@ss who invented these pieces of sh!t.

There have been numerous posts on these forums about agonizingly slow performance with Zip drives on some newer systems. From what I remember, the issue was driver-related. See if there are newer drivers available.

shawnmos: not kidding - 20+ minutes for a 50 meg file(or folder)

PCAddict: thanks, but its a little late now. oh well. the worst part is that it tied up all of the systems resources, it sucked, i couldn't even watch my screen saver cause it was so slow.

ssp: that isn't a word; it's 4 letters and even so it's closer to 4 words. The computer i was taking stuff off of has no cdrw or cdr, but the new one does.

You must have a gay zip drive. It took me only 2 minutes to transfer 100MB file from a paralle zip to pc.

2 minutes to transfer 100MB, I don't think so. That means that for 700MB it would take you 12 minutes, that's the same speed of an 8X burner, think about it. P-Zip's record at 7MB/Minute.

Yea they may be slow but when burners were $500, they were quite fast :)

Would it have been possible to take the hard drive out of the old puter, install it into the new one temporarily, and then transfer whatever you wanted before putting it back?

I suffered the click of death while working with my boss's important documents. Almost lost my job over that one. :(

Yea I understand SCSI and USB but isn't PP capped at 7MB/Minute. I keep my drive for something that CD-R's havent mastered yet, incryption and speed for a 10K file :)
I just keep my private stuff on it. It's still faster than burning it.

it takes me about 10 minutes to back up a folder from my hard drive to my zip250(ide) and compress it. without the compression it would be MUCH faster, but i'm impressed. especially because they're so cheap now :)

I hate my Zip Drive. Anyone getting one should get an internal or USB version. Parallel ISN'T AN OPTION!!!

Well, the easiest way you could have done it is to take your old harddrive out, slave it to your new machine, then just copy everything over... it would have taken less than 15 mins to do everything.
