Zip 250 vs. Zip 100?

I recently purchased an internal Zip250. Now, I hear from people that using zip100 disks on a zip250 is rediculously slow. Seeing as I have only one 250 disk and about 30- 100 disks, should I just return/sell this sucker and buy myself a zip100 or are the speed differences between using a zip100 on a 100 drive and 250 drive negligable? Thanks!

(I would have thought that the 250 might be faster than the zip100 in reading zip100 then again, there's the jazz drive. hehe)

dude if you have both kind of disk why dont you try them yourself? if you dont like what you see then return the sucker. ive never heard that the 100 are too slow on the 250 but its a possibility, however in this every changing technology world i would not know what to tell you, the 100 drives have such a huge following that its hard to tell if the 250's are gonna become a standard or not.

but if you have the 250 that handles both, then is that like the best of both worlds?

dam(i go both ways, well not really)

due to mechanical changes, and the fact that 250 disks are more dense, it's a fact that 250 drives handle 100 disks slower than 250 disks also. the read write heads of a 250 drives are smaller to accomodate the density of the 250 disks. so it takes MORE time for a 250 drive to go over such a sector of a 100 disk since it is so much LARGER, relatively speaking.

yeah, i paraphrased the above from an article i read when the 250 drives came out. =P it made sense to me then, still makes sense now since i used my own words. =)

100 is more popular than 250 since those who got 100 were reluctant to go 250 since who really needs that kind of storage. besides, there were CDRW drives also.

you may not notice the speeds unless you do a whole disk (both sizes) and actually sit there noticing the differences.

if you can return it, go ahead, but who really cares.

i would've told to you go CDRW, but you are already a user of zip100. if you would have asked me, i would've told you to save some money and get a zip100 drive.

Try it....use a sample file of like 20MB or so....time how long it takes...

Also, the 250MB disk are over 2x the density of the 100MB (2.5x to be exact :p ) Anyhow, they spin at the same rate....the 250MB will transfer data at 2.5X the rate, so "YES" the 100MB are slower.

This is like why 720K 3.5" floppies are slower than 1.44MB 3.5" floppies....

Hope this helps....

i'm sure it's not more than a sec or something. plus you can use 250mb disks, so i say stick with the 250. Just try it out yourself and see if it's too slow for you

Thanks for the info guys. The fact is, I ordered it but I still have a window where I can cancel it and get a zip100. I got this zip250 disk from someone else so I have actually never used a zip250 drive (or I wouldn't have had to ask the question!).

I do have a cdrw but sometimes when I'm transferring work from my office to home it is just easier to pop in a 100meg disk and bring that (I have a zip100 internal there). But yeah, it is definately not used for archival purposes..just a glorified floppy basically.

Now to figure out how to read the contents of this lousy zip250 disk :p
