voting was closed before the headbutt.

wrong

oh really? so they were still voting even after he did the headbutt?

Voting for the 2006 Golden Ball closed at midnight Sunday. In previous tournaments, the ballot has closed at halftime in the final and the winner announced soon after the match.

Well, it was a close fight between Zidane and Cannavaro, votes difference probably less then 30
overall play, he did deserve that award

Good for Zizou, IMO he shouldn't be judged by that one, final action of his career. I still think Materazzi said something about his mom to deserve the headbutt.

Materzzi was casting racial slurs and provoking Zidane the whole match. I for one am GLAD that he whupped his tail.

And he denies it...

""It is absolutely not true, I did not call him a terrorist. I'm ignorant. I don't even know what the word means"

😕

what I'm confused about is what language he spoke. Did Zidane understand materazzi speaking in italian? was materazzi speaking in french? did materazzi mispronounce something? confusion! 😕

They all speak English. Most people in Europe speak a bit of English.

Materazzi came up behind ZZ and was feeling him all up before ZZ trotted away... then he said
something to provoke the head-butt. Just like in all sports, it's usually the guy who responds to
something that gets the flag.

I have a feeling what he said didn't provoke him right away. maybe he said it when he was all touchy-feely, then Zidane walked away like it seemed like he was cool with it, and then caught Materazzi off-guard.

Zidane played in Italy's Serie A for 3 years IIRC and i'm guessing he understands some Italian. Either that or Materazzi spoke in English

whatever the Italian said, Zidane should not have reacted violently especially in a game watched live by 2 billion people (most watched sporting event in history). Why not ignore it, or respond verbally or complain to the refereee or something..... Even though he was born poor, he's rich now and he's been playing soccer in Europe for a LONG time - he SHOULD know how to handle situations like this - but he reacted in the worst way possible, and I think he realized that and that's why he walked off the field with head bowed. So no matter what was said, there could be no justification for this act, only deep remorse and apology.
