definately handled maturely by Zidane. I wouldnt say the same when he actually did it though...
but if Materazzi said the things that Zidane claims he said to him, then I guess the headbutt was reasonable..

Actually Zidane didn't say a thing about it. He wouldn't even mention what was said except that it involved his family. BBC had lip readers read what Materazzi said and some French players also said he said that stuff.

First off, that italian guy sure did dramatize that little head butt to the chest. Sure it probably knock him off balance and would send someone to the ground, but that's it. No need to lay on the ground like a little nancy boy.

i am not going to stand up for materazzi, but you are rediculous to defend ZZ. you think no one else talks sh-t about people's mom's? you ever played a game of basketball in a city park before? ZZ is one of the best players in the world--i am sure 50% of the games he plays, the other team specificially tries to go after him with physical play and taunting. he should be used to it and above it. just like every other star player in every other sport that goes through what he does.

and any claims about jersey pulling causing it are preposterous. any time two players come together in a world cup game, one or both will have a hold of the other's jersey (side note: did anyone see Trezeg's jersey while taking his PK? his collar was destroyed and he didnt headbut anyone.)

furthermore, it's totally hypocritical of him to tell kids not to do what he does but claim that he does not regret doing it. he is one of the greatest players of his time but this was a total disgrace--there are no excuses.

I dont understand why everyone thinks his headbutt was OK given what was said, do you guys think this is the first time something bad has been said to a player, it probably happens all the time, in Serie A, La Liga, Premiership, everywhere. If you cant keep your coool in the biggest match of your life, I am sorry you dont deserve to play or atleast looked up to as 1 of the best player in the world

My initial reaction was that I felt bad for Materazzi... now, I don't.
I would have done the same thing as Zidane.

Even without knowing what Materazzi said?

But knowing Materazzi's rep?

This is like someone hitting Mike Tyson below the belt on purpose in the middle of a boxing match. Certainly not something to condone, but given who it was getting hit below the belt, who really cares, he had it coming.

EDIT: Or like that Astros pitcher throwing at Barry Bonds and getting a standing ovation when he hit him and got thrown out of the game. Same sorta thing.

ZZ gave that bitch what he deserved. Yeah it's not a good example to set for the kids, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Calling ZZ's dying Algerian Muslim mother a terrorist who should die would be on par with telling me my mom should have died in WWII in Hiroshima (she's Japanese). It's some straight up racist BS, no question.

And Materazzi acting like he doesn't know what a terrorist is after 9/11 is about on the level of asshattery of a teenager not knowing who Britney is, it's a flat out lie to save face.

Do you think that if someone white in the NBA, say JJ Redick, told a black Muslim player that he's a terrorist who deserved to die, that JJ wouldn't get his clock cleaned?

And then the clock-cleaner would get a huge fine.

I stopped hitting people who talked smack in fourth grade. Either there's a lot of fourth graders on here, or a lot of sad adults who think it's OK to assault people who annoy them.

If it was game seven of the Championship series I would atleast wait till the game was over to do what is needed, rather than jeprodize my team's chance of winning, I am not saying its easy to restrain but playing in maybe the biggest game of your live you owe your team better

GJ Zidane. FIFA needs to clean up all these BS. Soccer is loosing its appeal to me from all these injury acting and general BS by players.

Man, you should just go to some good ole friendly soccer matches, then. I saw an excellent game yesterday, amateur competition. If you get tackled, no BS, they just stand up again and try to get their revenge. BY ACTUALLY SCORING.

Seriously, multi-million dollar soccer 'heroes' are waaaay overrated.

So if you were black and I threw out a racial epithet (say n***** Muslim terrorist), you would be able to restrain yourself? Somebody would be losing some teeth if they said that to me, I don't care if it's the Super Bowl I'm coming after you... 😉

you seem to be in the rather small minority on this issue.

Firstly, I think this is blown out of proportion, Time to move on.

For better or worse, seems "trash talking" is part of almost all sports, whether (American) football, B-ball, boxing, MMA, soccer, whatever. And just like every other sport, if you succumb to the taunts, you pay the price. Like ZZ did.

I'm 100% opposed to FIFA stripping ZZ of his award. That's way over-reacting. It's not like soccer players have a "bad boy" image, "drama queen" maybe. Jeez :disgust:

For my money, if anything ZZ's actions give soccer a more manly image, at least here in the USA.

Actually, racial slurs are a pretty big deal and FIFA was trying to crack down on them this W.Cup. I doubt he'll be stripped of his award (assuming that Materazzi used the word terrorist).

It was a 'your mother' comment last I heard. Must've been pretty ripe. I always thought it was the short bus kids that reacted to your mom jokes, guess soccer players don't like it either. 😛

See, lines like "I did your mom in the short yellow bus" would be consider an insult / joke / trash talking. But hoping that your mom die, that's not trash talking or taunting.

From Yahoo! Sports: (from interview today):
Zidane did not specify exactly what Italian defender Marco Materazzi said that enraged him, but that it was insulting to his sister and mother.

Another article (earlier):
Materazzi denies speaking of Zidane's mother

shouldn't this be obvious?
