Zerotherm Nirvana - Missing Fan Controller

I just received my product yesterday from Newegg and it was missing a fan controller!

I tried contacting the manufacturer and I actually spoke to someone and left my number but they would not call me back, and they would not pick up today either because I just went straight to voicemail.

I want to install it right away so is there any cheap alternatives to the fan controller?


Also... does anyone who has a antec900 on a 680i board know which direction to face the fan for the best airflow/cooling?

Call or email Newegg. Isn't the product supposed to come with a fan contoller?

I already did call Newegg but they said I would have to talk to the manufacturer and so after trying throughout the day, I finally got a hold of someone and they're sending me one today.

Took a lot of calls during the day to finally get a hold of someone though.

I don't understand Newegg's response. You shouldn't have accepted it. You order a new product that arrives with a missing component and Newegg says there's nothing it can do? BS. Having just ordered and received the same cooler from Newegg, I know it's covered by Newegg's standard return policy, meaning you could have returned it for a full refund. Next time, don't let them push you around. Also, I always use the online chat. It's much faster to reach a rep.

QFT, i've ordered many thousands of dollars from newegg every year and they will try and pawn it off on someone else but, if you push back, just a little, they'll always cave. I can't think of a time I've had to pay return shipping for an item in last couple years, not as far back as when I bought a refurbished 9800pro and in came in DOA.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will keep that in mind when dealing with them next time. I actually spoke to one of the reps through online chatting.

What's funny was I contacted them twice and I actually asked if I could get a refund the 2nd time and they said I would have to RMA, not get credited back the shipping fee and pay 15% to restock the item even though I contested that it was missing an item.

I will take that into consideration the next time if I run into this situation again.

I ended up calling the manufacturer again after numerous calls and they're shipping me the missing component which should arrive in 3 days.

It's a shame Newegg gave you such a runaround. At that point, you should have threatened to call you credit card company and dispute the charge. It's a pretty good bet that would have gotten Newegg's attention. Even if Newegg had still refused to ship you a new cooler and take back your old one for free, in a case like yours, where you didn't receive what you ordered and the retailer refused to fix the problem, your credit card company would have refunded your money. You would have ended up being able to keep the cooler sans fan controller and Newegg wouldn't have been able to keep your money. Newegg's position is ridiculous. I just bought some isopropyl alcohol from the drugstore and when I got home, I discovered it had already been opened. When I go back to the drugstore to get an exchange, are they going to tell me I have to contact Johnson & Johnson? Hope your controller comes soon.

I have my Nirvana plugged straight into the mobo CPU fan connector, and my mobo just keeps it running on max. Yeah its a little loud, but you could do that while you wait.

you don't have it listed in your sig but, depending on your motherboard you should be able to either manually control it or set it to temperature controlled.

I have the Gigabyte P35 DS3R Rev2.1. I tried changing the settings in Gigabyte's tuning software but the fan stays on max. Not sure if the 3 pins are matching up to the correct pins on the mobo connector.

Glad to hear you got it worked out. How do you like your Nirvana? I'm quite satisfied with mine...plus that blued steel is just gorgeous.

If it's spinning, they pinout is correct. The issue may now be that your motherboard is set up to control PWM fans, not voltage controlled fans. PWM stand for pulse width modulation and basically gives pulses of 12v to the fan with differing lengths and differing gaps to slow the fan down and there are some fans whose motors really do not respond to this due to the internally designed capacitance of the circuitry. Try moving the fan to another spot on the motherboard where the fan connector is just 3 pins, not 4.

Very interesting stuff. I have a very similar setup that I'm putting together right now. I'd rather not mess up the wiring job once it's set so I was wondering if I plug my nirvana 3 pin into the 3 pin sys_fan connector on my motherboard might I be able to control it via software? The other fan connectors on the motherboard are both 4 pin, the cpu_fan and pwr_fan connections. Are all 4 pin fan connectors PWM and all 3 pin voltage? If not would there be both types on one motherboard? Thanks for any advice.

You should be fine with just plugging it into the first 3 pins of the 4-pin header on your DS3L. I've asked Gigabyte if its possible to control a 3-pin CPU fan from the CPU fan header, since they seem to have changed the pins on the rev2.1 DS3R (and the EP35 variants too apparently).

QFT, boards set-up for 4 pin fans cannot possibly control the speed on a 3 pin fan. 3 pin fans operate strictly by voltage, dropping the voltage drops fan speed. 4 speed fans use PWM or pulse width modulation, basically it uses 12v and cuts it in and out at differing lengths in order to adjust fan speed. They are not interchangable nor is it possible to control both with the same connector.
