Zero Punctuation: COD 4

Once, again Yahtzee tells it how it is!

This guy should make a monthly game review/porno magazine based off of his reviews! Hell... I'd even buy it just for the articles 🙂

I think the endlessly-respawning enemy thing rankles me a lot more than other people - most don't seem to mind it, but it made the game entirely worthless for me.

It would have been easy for them to activate a timer that shuts off the spawn after a certain time period. Would be good for players who like to wait it out.

There's only one or two spots where the never ending spawns really pissed me off, it's not a showstopper by any means.

CoD4 is the best SP shooter experience since probably HL2 for me, nothing else even comes close.

The Spawn kills are a PITA I agree. Considering how small the maps are, it's easy to spawn, then get killed only a second after. Though there are times when a team can get easily pushed into a corner and fighting out of it is also a PITA>

Grr, it just loops the ads for me, and I've tried it with some of his other stuff too. And yes, I have cookies enabled for the site

Yeah, I'm a clear -> enter guy, not a RAMBO!!!1

I remember at the end of his last review he said he would do COD4 if everybody just got off his fucking nutsack about it.
Looks like he came through. 😉

EDIT:
Q: Whats better than Call of Duty 4?
A: A three-cunted hooker!!!!

The game isn't about waiting it out. The game forces you to push forward by doing the constant respawns. It's part of the point of the game, so that you can't just sit back and wait for everyone to get killed. It forces you to advance, which is good. I mean, for half the game you're trying to find someone with a nuke, time is of the essence, and sitting back and waiting for the enemies to come and run into your fire is hardly going to be a valid tactic in that situation.

Destroys the suspension of disbelief. You don't go running headfirst into enemy fire. If they want me to advance, they should give me a compelling reason that makes me take chances, not force it with an enemy-spigot. That's exactly the point - I resent being forced to play a game in some way I don't want to. That's not why I buy games. I'm fine with linearity in a shooter, but when they remove from me the choice of when and where to shoot from, you might as well be playing Area-51 in the arcade in the mall.

Hell, timed objectives aren't exactly new in FPS if they want some time-pressure tension, and they work really well. They could even justify it with some kind of pseudo-realistic radio communication:

"Satellite intel indicates we've got about X minutes until they're out of our survelliance range!" or whatever.

It's a design decision that bugs the shit out of me and destroys any enjoyment I might get out of their game. Doesn't seem to matter much, because apparently most of the gaming population just wants to see Things Go Boom, so it sells like hotcakes, but my opinion is still that it's a subpar shooter for removing the decision making process from the player.

Gabe from PA nailed it spot on:

It's funny, in the end it turns out I'm not a big fan of COD 4. I tossed it in last night and played through the first handful of levels. It certainly looks great but I think Rainbow 6: Vegas has really spoiled me. The lack of a cover system in COD is really frustrating to me. It looks and feels like a tactical squad shooter. Only I don't have any ability to play tactically or control my squad. The enemies can blind fire from behind cover but apparently I can't? My teammates can shoot the hinges off a door and then kick it in but I can't so much as jiggle a doorknob? After R6 I never thought I'd have to toss a flash bang into a room by standing in the middle of the doorway again. Visually it's a real stunner but game play wise it feels dated to me.

I've usually been right on with him for all of his reviews. His recent two on The Witcher and CoD4 haven't agreed with me as much as the rest. Sorta surprises me, but interesting. Maybe I'll have to try CoD4 now, however, I heard SP is really short and I don't really care to play it MP.

Yeah I agree---and the whole scripted bull shit, everything is so damned linear.
