gopunk, right from the review: compared to the iPod's scrollwheel, it makes going through long lists of songs a tedious chore.

Whats the point of having a huge hd based mp3 player if its a pain to go through a long list of songs?

I love my ipod because its so damn easy to navigate to songs and stuff.

I guess for most people the Ipod is better but for me the looks and slightly smaller size isn't worth the $100 difference.

I've had my Zen for about six months now, and it roxors my boxors. I've seen and worked with iPod's, and while they're fairly sleek looking, I wouldn't give up my Zen for one. And it's ten times better with the latest firmware, which makes the LCD display much better looking and much more intuitve and user friendly.

No problems navigating through a long list of songs, either. Just collapse everything so it only shows artist, album, etc, and then go where you need to and expand. Nice and simple. The Zen rocks.

i could have sworn we had this discussion before... or maybe it was someone else. but basically, unless you do it in the stupidest way possible, it's not that bad. if you have the database feature enabled or if you group your mp3s into organized directories, you just scroll to artist, go into that, find your album, go into that, and find your song. i'm sure it's easier with the scroll wheel, but it's not a big deal, at least in my every day usage. i'm the sort of guy that just plays songs of a certain genre... or album... or artist... or just set it to shuffle all. it's pretty rare that i would have a need to go through and pick each song one by one. but, if that is what your needs are, then perhaps the ipod would be a better choice.

no they don't, msrp for ihp-100/120 is 350 and 400, respectively. msrp for the 10 gig and 20 gig ipods are 300 and 400 respectively. however, the ihp-100/120 can be had for ~305 and ~355 respectively, if you know where to look (i got mine from compuplus.com)

oh yea and ipod has on the fly playlists, which ihp series does not. i hope they'll add it later (iriver's pretty good about releasing firmware updates)

ipod!

the iriver looks very interesting tho. most ppl are unlikely to pay the premium for an ipod (i sure didnt'.. i went dell :)). BUT, with that said, i'm very anal when it comes to the size of the player. Even that .1" makes a difference for me. I love MD's (except for the fact netMD sucks balls), and that 3-5mm difference in size is quite noticable IMO...... but again, not many ppl are probably as anal as me when it comes to this :)

wait for the iriver, and see how it goes. all i can say is i love the navigation for the ipod, and the fact itunes keeps track of #of times played :)

if you want something now, get an ipod :)

Got my 10GB 2G iPod for $169. You just have to look in the right places. This was a "refurb" but apple sent me a new, sealed unit.

When Apple discontinues a product line what's left has a tendency to get pushed into the "refurb" pile.

IRiver has lame battery replament issues: Below is taken from their Website:

"Q: Can I replace the battery within the iHP?
A: The battery within the iHP cannot be replaced as it contains an internal battery that cannot be removed.

Q: How much playback time can I get from a full charge of the battery?
A. The iHP will playback music files for 16 hours before needing to be recharged. The player works by spinning the hard drive, loading songs into a buffer, then stopping the drive. Please note that any activity that increases the amount of time the hard drive spins will cause the playback time to be reduced, including: Adding and deleting files from the iHP, playing back files or higher quality such as WAV files, and creating / updating the DB file.

Q. How long will internal battery last? Will it have to be replaced eventually?
A. An internal Li-Ion Polymer battery is used for iHP. The life expectancy of rechargeable batteries is usually calculated by how many times it can be re-charged / discharged and charged. The manufacturer of the iHP battery guarantees that it can be re/discharged over 3,000 times. It is also guaranteed to perform at a minimum of 80% of its initial performance before 3000 times of re/discharging.

Considering these factors, if you play the iHP for 4 hours per day, you can play it for 4 days before recharging it considering a fully charged battery can last up to 16 hours.

After 3 years of use the battery performance will still perform at least 80% of the initial performance. The initial playback time may be shortened to 12 hours and 48 min (from initial 16 hours); therefore the battery expectancy life will be about 4 to 5 years for normal users.

To extend the battery life: Li-Ion Polymer batteries do not have a memory function not like a Ni-Cd and Ni-Mh battery. We recommend recharging the battery before fully discharging in order to extend the battery life.

You can get a Zen NX 30 GB player for under $250 shipped from Amazon. Meanwhile a 30 GB Ipod is $425 from Amazon. Here's a review of the new Zen at IGN and Cnet. If size and design are most important, than the Ipod is better, but if you don't care as much about that, the price difference just isn't justified.

If you have large audio files to preserve the sonics of the music, then the Zen is definitely better.

If you only have 128 kbps files, then of course, sonics don't really matter as much as convenience. Then looks/size can factor in to justify the Ipod purchase.

To me, sonics and a good radio matter. Thus, the Zen wins. I jog with the whole kit and kaboodle and have no issues. I used to jog with tape players and cds back in the day, so the Zens size and weight is a Godsend. Its very light.........to me at least! :)

No poll!

Had there been one, I'd have picked the comedy "Dude, you're getting a DELL--DJ!!!" option!
