Please, let me exhibit my ignorance ... ... I'll try to achieve this through some weird (but genuine) questions/thoughts ...

A) Some of you previously said ... " 'Strix Halo' will be pretty expensive ... " ... ... OK, then ... ... Apple's M4 will also be pretty expensive, but built over N3E ... since 'Halo' is going to be such expensive it would have been great to be manufactured on N3E node too ...

B) Would it be too 'creative' to consider Apple users as ... TSCM 'beta testers' ????

C) If you insist ... I will be honest : I am very, very curious about Zen 6 uncore ... and what it will be all about ...

Yes, but time to market is key, and N3E just came out (and only on ipad lol). If N3E was delayd for some reason, Strix Halo would be delayed too.

Not really, there's nothing left in silicon for you to beta test when you are buying an iphone. The more correct analogy would be - Apple is "Priority Boarding" a node

I wonder if the recent introduction of EPYC 4004 on AM5 opens the door for high core count Zen5c and Zen6c processors to be introduced onto the platform (past 16 cores)

Physically, so far, it appears to be the exact same packages. Commercially, there is official support for stuff like ECC that, while present in the normal products, isn't formally supported. Also, with the Epyc name attached to it, it'll likely be a long life product with support and warranty replacements available for longer than typical for DT Ryzen.

On second thoughts if say 100s HDDs/SSDs are used for data storage and that their average utilisation rate is very low then one of those CPU can easily manage thoses 100s HDDs/SSDs with much better power efficency than using a big 64C Epyc plateform, that s typical of corporate in house storage.

Now if it s for data centers that have huge running bandwiths permanently like google or Msft clouds that s another matter, and btw, this exemple show that when you re using the clouds it s still necessary to have your own back up even if it s a very slowish one :

EPYC 4004 and 4005 (to get back on topic of this thread) serve two purposes, which AMD enumerated on their very own press briefing slide deck:
  • SMB,
  • hosters.
For quite a while now, there have been hosters who rented out bare-metal Ryzen server instances. Such as Hetzner. These hosters can either continue to use Ryzen, or migrate to EPYC 4000.

Ryzen has always been sort of an alternative to Xeon E.¹ With pros and cons. AMD and their partners finally got around to work on reducing or removing those cons now. They took their sweet time, but that's understandable as margins aren't quite the same as with EPYC 7000/8000/9000.

This reminds me of the launch of original Ryzen, when AMD named their chipsets <letter>3xx to one-up Intel, who had <letter>2xx at the time. Intel's current year Core Ultra lineup will be named 2xx, so the obvious solution is to name yours 3xx lol

I'll ever understand marketing guys. Why can't it simply be "Ryzen HX 370"

"3" is generation, "7" is tier, the last number is to differentiate between similar products in the same tier. Couldn't be easier to understand and track.

There is no need to designate the tier twice with a "9" prefix. Let's not forget that GPUs have never needed this, why do CPUs?

Shortly before the expected performance of Computex 2024, Asian media agree that AMD has refined its name. Accordingly, the new generation should not start at 100, but at 300, in order to be sorted directly behind Intel's Core Ultra 100 and 200. The official tenor is that it should represent the generation of the NPU better. Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 and Ryzen AI 9 365 are now named among others.
