Was wondering if the zalman VF900 fits on the 4870 and if so does it cool it better than the stock one? My 4870 idles at 85 which is way way to hot...

Not sure if the VF900 fits or not, but you'd likely have to be additional ram sinks regardless.

The VF1000 may be a better fit, I believe another user here successfully fitted one to his 4870, though he had to purchase additional ram sinks as well.

You should use the fan profile tweak in the interim though. Even a slight increase the fan speed drops the core temperature by a lot. My card idles at about 78C without the fan tweak, and with the fan speed set at 50%, it idles at 47C. You can find the instructions with a quick google search for 'Radeon 4870 fan profile tweak'.

The VF900 fits and you'll get better temps, but I don't think that it will be a great improvement ( although I might be wrong ). If you really want a capable cooler, get an accelero S1 or thermalright HR-03 . These are the best coolers for graphic cards right now, the accelero is also extremely cheap.

Vote for keeping stock cooler and using CCC fan profile fix to adjust fanspeed to 40% or better.

They're also three times as large and don't work well if your case is poorly ventilated. The VF900 keeps my 8800GT under 70*C and is never audible. It will fit your card and I *highly* recommend it.

Forget using the stock fan at 40% I tried that :) too loud for my taste. And I do have the S1, which I tried and it does work, I just don't like how big it is and how strange it looks with a 120mm fan strapped to it. Maybe I'll try the VF900...
