Just installed the Zalman HS.. do I really need to install the FAN supplied??

Its just that I can't, because the PSU is directly over the cpu 🙁

Advice? Anyone here with the Zalman CPU installed without the Fan ?

Thanks

Yeah, i know it gets hot 🙂

But its a XP 1700+.. also its going to be idle most of the day, as its a server box.. doing irc, ftp, http etc..

Also as a side note, anyone know what volts i can knock it down to, and it still run ok?

Thanks

No. Well actually, it's ok, as long as it doesn't go a whole lot much higher than that. Meaning, a few degrees...

Thats idle btw, not at full load.

Do I really need this fan? As its no longer a silent solution with the fan, it makes a bit of noise 🙁

is that load or idle? if it's load, then you're fine.

Its idle as i said before..

What can the chip, if it was higher in full load, like 70C.. is that ok?

70 is on the higher end of the scale, but it is still within acceptable range. hell i think amd's limits are 90c😛

just make sure you have decent case ventilation. if u don't already have one.. slice a 92mm hole in the side and install a vantec stealth, or a panaflow🙂 good case circulation lets you get away with a lot less cpu cooling. thats why i only have a 2000rpm fan on my cpu.

On mine, MBM reads the internal diode 8 C less than MBM reads it. If your BIOS is reading 56 C you're probably ok IF you are reading the interanl diode...BUT.
I dunno what mobo you have but it sounds like your are reading the socket right under the chip (since MBM and the BIOS are reading the same temp). In that case 56 C is pushing it a bit because your cpu core is probably around 66 C

You could always fix a panaflo somewhere near the HS for good measure or just live with it running a tad on the high end.
