any opinions if this HSF is too heavy? it will be hang'in on the side of a D875PBZ board in a sonata case

i will careful moving the case but it seems like a lot of weight to be hanging on the side.

We've had some threads previously on this topic, here is the gist of them...

Although the all-copper version of this HSF is way over Intel recommended specs, many people are using it successfully. In fact, I have not heard of problems.

On the other hand it has also been shown that the all-copper and the aluminum-copper hybrid versions provide almost identical cooling.

If you do a search on this forum you will find the links to the related threads with included links to authoritative reviews and benchmarks.

BTW, anyone needing one of these HSFs quickly, or wants to see them in person, they are available at Micro Center brick and mortar stores.

That's interesting, the stock HSF that came with my P4c 2.6 was not bad at all.

the reviews i read before buying the 3.2C claim it's a hot running proc; the 3.2C is 200MHz faster than the 3.0C. i have read intel has pushed this cpu about as fast as they can.

if i had known more i could have saved a few bucks and bought the cpu and HSF separately.

I have heard people recommend that you buy the retail CPU for a couple bucks more to take advantage of the 3 year warranty.

ok, so the retail comes with the hsf (and of course the 3 yr warranty). that's worth it.

The stock HSF with my P4c 2.4 is very loud, even using asus qfan, am waiting for my zalman to arrive

the zalman went in without a hitch, did not have to take on the mobo for for an intel. turned it on and it's a lot quieter than the stock hsfan...but it still is not silent. i used zalman's 'fan mate 1' to get the rpm down and it runs real quiet now: around 1450 RPM's and temps are around 35 - 40

tooltime,
I think your going to like the zalman. I have had one on my Asus P4C800 E and 2.8c for a couple of weeks and it has been working great. My cpu temps idle are around 30c and even after several hours of encoding the most it's reached is 44c. That's with the fan running at 1650 rpm. I agree it's not "silent" but it's quieter than any I've used.

The problem with that is you cannot remove the stock HS without voiding the warranty, if I'm not mistaken.

Go for it :)

i've had a zalman since my AMD 2100 (ZM 6000) and its a great cooler

The ZM 7000A is much much better however is more susceptible to dust - if you have a very dusty case i'd go for a Zm 6500B

regarding all copper vs aluminum/copper it depends on the heat of the CPU you're cooling. At work we sell both so from what i saw they offer identical performance in the 2.4/2.6C heat level, but when coupled with a P4 3.2 there is a degree or 2 of difference

the weight isnt really an issue either but if you plan to use it on an AMD cpu i'd use a copper shim protector. Either way never transport the cas in the car vertical - just lay it flat. Thats what i do for lanparties and i never had any problems

People,

I have attached the Zalman twice each time cleaning the Arctic silver Ceramique with ultra pure isopropyl and both time I get the same result - 43C idle and up to 59C doing some heavy CPU work (these temperatures were independent of the Zalman fan speed 1000-2500 rpm). And then I see these posts bragging about 30C with nearly the same equipment!!!! What the XXXX am I doing wrong?

The heat sink is well tightened and I followed the Artic silver direction of spreading some on the heatsink first and then cleaning off followed by placing a small "BB" of artic silver on the CPU. I think it is either a false reading OR there is some major problem with the heat transfer from the CPU to the heatspreader or from the heatspreader to the heatsink!

Any recommendations?

Intel P4 3.0C @ 3.0GHz
Abit IC7-G
2 x 512MB Corsair XMS PC3500 DDR
Zalman CNPS7000-AlCu + AS3 ceramique
Antec Sonata case
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro => way too noisy (I am replacing with a Sapphire ultra which has a heatsink & no fan)
twin Maxtor Diamondmax SATA Plus 80.0 GB
Windows XP Professional

Hey rbaum....do you like my sig?

Looks like you copied the first 4 lines of my sig with same spacing and capitalization, editing where needed.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery;)

Yes I did...your system was almost identical to mine. BTW any ideas on this heat problem?

Thanks.

I think your temps are within normal range.

I haven't seen anyone with a P4 3.0 talking about 30 degrees CPU temp.

Mine is idling right now at 41, goes up to about 55 during heavy gaming.

The 3.0 and 3.2 are pretty high-wattage CPUs I think.

Your Antec case should have pretty good airflow. Are your cables stowed away to improve airflow?

My CPU/case temps went down about 3 degrees recently when I added the VGA Sliencer by Arctic Cooling, which exhausts the video card heat out the rear of the case.
