With my fan mate on low, it's nice and quiet like I would expect. However when I turn up the rpm's even slightly the fan gets loud as hell, at max it almost sounds like a bus driving through my case. My 7000's on my other systems don't do this so I'm wondering if I just got a bad fan or if all the 7700's are like this, thanks.

Mine does not do that. It is certainly louder when I turn it up, but it's not that bad. You might either have a bad one, or I'm losing my hearing in my old age.

i just got my 7000B todya and its very quiet, at max rpms. i guess the bigger one is a bit louder, but noise for me is nothing i care about.

If you are using the Fanmate I would suggest hooking it up directly to the MB's fan header and controlling it via BIOS or SpeedFan. You'll get much more precise control and have the added benefit of dynamic control of fan RPM based on CPU temp.

As far as actual noise, I've used several Zalman 7000's and found them to be pretty loud at 100%, I haven't used the 7700 yet. Also keep in mind "loud" is subjective, what?s quiet for one person is loud to another, for me a 80mm L1A at 12v is still a bit loud for my tastes.

You shouldn't have any problems. The great thing about Zalman is they provide some pretty damn cool heatsinks that are supposed to be efficient with their cooling and quiet at the same time. Maybe RMA it?

The 7700 should be inaudible up to about 1250 rpm fan speed. My system tops out around 1700 rpm with Fanmate 2. I'd say the noise level is about the same as the 7000 under full load. However, it is moving a lot more air.

actually at full load the 7000 will move more air. that means 2500 rpms, which i set mine to since i don't care about noise. then it moves some seriuos air.
