Zalman 7000B-ALCu on an Asus A8N-SLI Premium ?

Maybe someone can help me out. I just built a new rig with an Asus A8n-SLI Premiun motherboard and an AMD 3700 San Diego. I had bought a Zalman 7000B-ALCu cooler to use instead or the stock heatsink that comes with the retail package, but when I put the system together I couldnt figure out how to get it on and the computer was already apart so I couldnt check with you guys. I've seen a few people on here that have the same board and cooler so it must work.

The problem I had was that the Asus mb has a black plastic retainer on the top that screws into a metal backing plate on the underside of the motherboard. The Zalman directions say to remove the stock retainer and use there plastic backing plate on the underside. Anyway I removed the 2 screws and took off the plastic retainer on the top but the metal backing plate seemed to be stuck to the back of the motherboard somehow. I dont know if its glued or not but I didnt want to take a chance with prying it off and messing up the motherboard.

So does the backing plate come off or is there a way to use the Zalman without removing the stock backing plate? Anyone with this setup ? I want to see if its doable before I bring it back.

Right now I have the 3700 running @ 2.625 from 2.2 on the stock cooler with temps at 39c idle and 51c full load @ 4.50v. Any help would be great. Thanks

I haven't used that board but I've removed plenty of back plates before. Sometimes they are glued on but it should still come off with out much of a problem. If it doesn?t seem like it will come off easily you can try heating it up with a heat gun or hair dryer.

Thanks for the tip, I think I'm gonna switch cases soon so I'll try it once I pull the mb. Anyone know if its posible to use this or another decent heatsink with the stock backing plate in case I cant remove it?

The Thermalright XP-90 seems like a good one for you, if you don't want to have to mess with the backplate. You'll need a separate fan, and most people here recommend the Panaflo series or the Nexus series. It'll cost a bit more, but from what I hear, it's worth it.

The Thermalright xp-90 will go on with the existing backplate? I was looking at that one first but I ended up short on time to order one and the local Comp USA only had the Zalman. But now that the systems already built and working fine for now I'm in no rush. If that will definatelly work I'll probably go that rought as it cools better anyway.
