It appears that Check Point's acquisition of ZoneAlarm a few weeks ago has pushed a beta out the door without proper testing. Check out the user forums over at ZoneLabs for details.
http://forum.zonelabs.org/zonelabs/board?board.id=inst

They've worn themselves down to a 47% approval rating over at Cnet for the lateset free version.

Of course, they have yet to acknowledge there really is a problem, so people are starting to get a little aggravated.

Here's a list of the current issues, just for your perusal.

Zone Alarm Pro (even when it is shut down) has caused Norton not to scan incoming email attachments. - thereby compromising safety.
Client appearing on the screen coincides with system reboot... every single time the client appears.
Client causes BSOD at random intervals on some computers.
Does not play well with AOL 9.0
Does not play well with File sharing programs (BitTorrent, eMule, etc)
Does not play well with other antivirus programs (PC-cillin; Trend Micro Internet Security 2003; Panda antivirus)
Does not play well with checkdisk
Does not play well with AdSubtract
Slows internet to crawl on some computers (IE6)
Does not play well with Opera or Netscape

Does not play well with Email clients Bloomba, Eudora or Outlook

Does not work well with SAProxyPro Mailwasher Pro (much less crash than Bloomba)

XP's Taskbar
XP's System Tray (won't accept neighbors)

Does not work with IIS and the programs that need it: Visual Studio, FrontPage
Does not work with IIS, so disables local webserver.
FrontPage, and Visual Studio.net
will not open .aspx pages with a data lookup component (postback/loopback)

screwed up google toolbar and renamed the Norton and Google toolbars... fixed them after a restart

I still use ver. 2.6.362. I believe that was the last good version of the program, and it still works very well for me.

I gave up on newer versions of Zone Alarm when they screwed the pooch with ver. 3.xx, including horrendous uninstall errors that left missing vxd errors, requiring manually editing the registry to fix... IF you knew what to look for. They tried to get cutesy with the interface and forgot about making the program work smoothly.

Try out Kerio instead. I have a pretty recent version on my laptop and it works great.

I just installed the newest version. (upgrade)

Was using 4.5.380.000
(No issues at all with this version)

Now using 50.590.015

I just upgraded a few hours ago ... so I'll repost back if I have issues.

So far ,,, Ok.
I'm using IE6, and it seems alittle snapper to me (IMO).
I'll try alil Netscape now .. to see if it barfs...
(I'm not using AV right now)

Yup.. tried out the new version yesterday and everything works fine until I load up BitTornado. Then my system freezes up and I have to hit the reset button.

I now received a work around:

The current workaround from Zone Labs is to continue to use your
previous version of Zone Alarm.

Thank You,

I'm using 5x and have no problems. The people who have the most problems are the ones that try to upgrade from an older version.

Linux has plenty of bugs and holes. If it became really popular you would a lot of problems with it.

Yes, I can also confirm that this version of ZA is buggy and unreliable.

I reverted to the latest version in the v4 series.

FYI, the install of the v5 ZA was on a clean image that I had restored my system too.

Installed 5.0.590.015 a few days ago. Not a problem anywhere - running XP Pro w/SP2. Z/A coexists beautifully for me. It has a lot of options and settings - I use all CUSTOM settings - and have no problems. AOL 9 doesn't work well with anything as far as I know. I don't use Norton anything - so no problems there. It works perfectly with Eudora Pro 5.1, and McAfee VScan, and Outlook Express. It also works with the new Corel WordPerfect Office Suite 12. For me it is a "go."

Hmm, I installed it yesterday with no problems to report. I'm running Win2000.
