z77 Hyper Threading Question

Got a question that I can't seem to find the answer to...

Please forgive me if this has been asked, or if the answer is posted somewhere obvious.

Do all z77 MotherBoards support hyper threading (assuming you have a CPU that does too)?

The reason I'm confused about this, is 'hyper threading' seems to be missing from the description of many motherboards, yet is explicitly stated on others. For example, pretty much every Asus board (as listed on newegg.com) does not state hyper threading... it seems like at least their high end boards should have it, while most (even the low end) ASRocks and a few Gigabyte state it explicitly.

HT is a CPU feature, and support for it is pretty much assumed on modern motherboards.

Yeah it can be confusing. What board were you looking at?

Have not narrowed it down that far yet ...

Looking at ASRock, Asus or Gigabyte ... something z77.

If unsure, try going to the manufacturers' sites and downloading the full user manuals. They will probably list HT in the specs if they support it. But again, I'd be surprised if any 7-series chipset board doesn't support HT. Others please chime in if I'm wrong.

I've checked the web sites. The Asus website for the P8Z77 Series does not mention HT at all, nor does it mention it for any of their Z77 boards. ASRock does on some boards, as does Gigabyte.

Just checked out the manual for Asus P8Z77-V, and it does mention HT support.

Wonder why they don't put it on their website, like other MB manufacturers do?

It is a CPU feature, not a motherboard feature.

The motherboard will accept any chip (HT or not) that fits its specific socket (1155, 1156, 1366, et cetera)

All of our current chipsets support Hyper-threading. So about the only place you would see it listed to do with the motherboard is in the Bios to enable or disable it.

Wonder why they don't put it on their website, like other MB manufacturers do?

I think what happens is that after a while certain technologies get just accepted as status quo and so they stopped being mentioned. For example, in the mid-2000s every board and chip mentioned whether it was 64-bit compatible, but now they all are, so it doesn't get mentioned. HT is making that transition when it comes to motherboards.

Excuse me for registering only to ask this question, though I've been fighting many hours against a "problem" which I'm feeling unable to solve, and it seems you guys know what you are talking about.

I recently (couple days ago) got a new PC: Windows 7 + Asus P8Z77 V LX2 + i7 3770 (which is a quad core, that supports Hyper-Threading).

At the beginning, when few ASUS drivers where installed, I could see 8 "CPUs" on Windows, but I can achive this no longer now.

Even I've updated the latest chipset drivers and all the ASUS stuff about BIOS and so on, and even I've got HT enabled on the BIOS, I can see only 4 "CPUs" at Windows.

At Win7 "advanced boot options" (msconfig) I could select 8 cores at the beginning but the dropdown menu doesn't go any further than 4, now.

I've restarted my PC many times, testing MANY configurations, though, no matter what I do, no more than 4 CPUs appear.

I'm absolutely thrilled with this question. Since I use multitasking a lot, I do want HyperThreading, but feel completely unable to activate it!

Any suggestion, advice or tip would be greatly appreciated.

Excuse me. After reading another thread from this great forum I could find the solution:

At Win7 "advanced boot options" (msconfig) I could select 8 cores at the beginning but the dropdown menu doesn't go any further than 4, now.

This was the problem: I should not tell Windows how many cores/threads do I have. So, after unchecking this option and rebooting, 8 cores (4x2) where properly detected.
