The Gamersdepot review makes a lot more sense and is more informative. They concluce that the speakers sound pretty good, but the bass can become too boomy at times. However, I listen to electronic music a lot, and my brother listens to a lot of rap. As well, I play a lot of games. So, this set of speakers seems like it would fit my needs pretty well. Plus, the bass can always be toned down. Of course, they said they did that and it was still overpowering at times.

I wonder if that Dolby Digital/DTS decoder thingy can be disabled so you can pass your eax or other 3d sounds through it? What if your card already handles 5.1 and that thing ruins it? Can't you just buy the speakers?

It does have 5.1 direct analog inputs so thats where you hook up your sound card for EAX/A3D games. For DVD/Music playback, just switch over to the Digital inputs.

$400 for some speakers? Not worth it at all, get altec lansing 641, $150 if you look around, not worth another 250 for a channel a decoder and a few watts

Lol, thats a pretty subjective opinion. I haven't heard the Z-680s or the 641s but the 680s could be much better for all I know. To an extant with many things you get what you pay for. Heck, I have speaker cable that costs about that much for a single seven foot bi-wired pair. Totally worth it to me on my main stereo.

I thought the DTS/DD5.1 portion of the speaker decoder is only enabled when it detects a DTS/DD5.1 stream. Otherwise, it'll just pass the music through (ie, with EAX/A3d effects).

Thats if you are using the digital inputs. You cannot pass multi-channel info like EAX/A3d effects through the digital inputs. It will just treat it as a stereo source. You can still use the 5 speakers under Pro-logic II but its different than what EAX/A3D really wanted, which is discreet signals for each channel. This is where the 5.1 analog inputs come in. The sound card does the processing for EAX/A3D and sends it out through its 5.1 analog speaker outputs (again, output from the digital output is only two-channel stereo). The speaker, then just takes them into its 5.1 analog input and does no processing of its own (thats why they called it 5.1 DIRECT input).

Ahh! Thanks for the clarification. That makes complete sense.

I think it's an excellent reason to go vote, even if the No box is the only one I punch on the entire ballot

Huh?

Although more and more reviews are showing up, I'm still looking for that definitive "comparative" review. Yeah, I know, some of the current reviewers are stating that "xyz sounds a little bit better than the 680 in these areas" but I think a face-off would be most beneficial to those of us deciding between the z-680, promedia 5.1s, and megaworks 510ds.

Any thoughts on this matter?

Too bad the Megaworks 550D doesn't have a wireless remote and a control pod like the Logitech has -- I like having volume control there, as well as a headphone jack. Let's go scour the net for those comparative reviews! :)

Wow, I can get an Energy Take 5.1 system for just a little more ... but that's where my bias shows ...

Actually, that would be your common sense showing... You pay a little more, but it gets you mid-range frequencies. :)

Thing that bugs me about all these computer speakers is the lack of mid-range .. or at least, that's what all the reviews tell me.
I think I'm getting the 641's .. music gets the most attention from my speakers (downgrading from yamaha + paradigm oldschool)

What are your mp3s ripped at? Before getting my PM 5.1s 128 sounded fine to me, but now they sound like ass. Instead of using Winamp's equalizer, use the soundcards Bass/Treble(or Equalizer) adjustments.

Dang it! When are these going to be available? I need replacements for my freshly-sold speakers.
