MMMmmmm yummy... Actually this really is eaten:

While I have grown to like most seafood it's still the final fronter of food for me. I'll eat ANYTHING once or twice just to try it but if it's seafood I always take a pause. One wonders what got people to eat these items in the first place. I know poverty and starvation is the mother of invention for much of the culinary world. But surely not for all acquired tastes. I can just see the first person to try Lobster:

"You should have seen bill last night man, I dared him to eat a sea cockroach. Put 50 bucks down he couldn't do it. Damn you should have seen it, most disgusting thing I've ever seen. He tore it's legs off, cracked open it's claws and SUCKED out the meat!! quickest 50 I've ever lost"

I have a picture that is similar in color and texture to that, but I would be banned instantly if I posted it.

Are you trying to tell us something? 😉

Mmmmmm.
Hoya is great if served fresh... I've had it a few times here and enjoyed it immensely.
Of course I was living about 100km from Miyagi Prefecture at the time.

I would certainly try it if offered it. The description 'their peculiar taste, described as "something like iodine"[1] and "rubber dipped in ammonia."' piques my curiosity.

This does not sound tasty. If It said "tasted like beef" or "tasted like cookies" or "sweet, has lots of sugar" than I bet it would be good, but this iodine, rubber, and ammonia flavor .... well, it sounds pretty horrible, like, maybe even as bad as brocolli!
