Yep, gotta make sure you know people real well before saying stuff like that, even in jest. And even then it still can backfire sometimes.

I think your joke is fine... BTW, I bet you anything that she has told multiple people already in an attempt to tarnish your reputation. You better be on the lookout to be extra nice to the other people for a while. Seriously, she's bragging about telling you off to other coworkers right now.

Please. I've made worse jokes around my coworkers and haven't had a problem. It all depends on who you're working with and how well you know them.

That was an uncalled for and accusatory remark.

I never lived in those days.

I personally wouldn't have made that comment, but I keep my mouth shut at work because I already know that there's a bunch of stiffs working with me. So I stay out of trouble and don't make jokes, I keep it strictly professional.

I think it's all in the delivery. I know guys that can say just about anything, and he's met with a smile. People find him charming. I, on the other hand, and usually taken the wrong way, so I watch what I say.

Yeah, what you said sounded a little....immature. I'm sure it was intended to be taken lightly, but in an office-atmosphere, you'd be better of saving those comments for your female friends. At least she was cool about it tho.

Yeah I guess that was very un-PC of me to say

Um, Geekbabe didn't even post in this thread.

Um, I know that. My point is that we're female and we probably would have called him on it on the spot. I doubt I would have done it as tactfully as the woman did with him. I don't think I would have gone to his boss, but I would have done it in front of his friends.

They key difference is in the intention. His comment was stated with levity and was intended to be taken humorously and lightly, while your comment to me had a negative and accusatory tone.

I am guessing most of the people responding with derogatroy comments against the girl do not work in a professional environment.

If you work in a professional setting, you are expected to treat others with respect at all times and focus on your responsibilities. I know that everyone wastes some time at work and jokes around with their buddies, but it is NOT acceptable to make inappropriate remarks to people who you do not know in the workplace - sexual, racial or otherwise. You have opened up your company to a lawsuit if she decided to REALLY take offense and file a "hostile work environment" suit. Creating that liability makes you expendable and is a fast way to getting shown the door.

You may find lots of people to pat you on the back and tell you she is a hyper-sensitive bitch, but I assure you, NONE of them work in management or HR in your company.

The fact that she responded the way she does speaks volumes about her character. The fact that you resolved the issue says a little about yours. Learn from this and save the chauvanism for the bars.

At least you are perceptive.

It's a double standard. If she and her girlfriends were sitting there making jokes about a guy, would you really think a guy would complain about it?

In there lies one of my problem with all these PC crap. It mostly only applies to woman/minority. If some woman said "you guys are just a bunch of animal!" and you get offended and go to the boss, what chances are that she'll be disciplined, let alone fired? Reversed the role and you can kiss that job of yours goodbye. I do think that even though the lady imo over-react on such trivial matter, she handles it commendably.

Life isn't fair. Maybe one day they'll run out of things to complained or blame other people for it.

You got off easy. Consider yourself lucky. This is the business world, which is different from anything else you've ever dealt with. 😉

At least you apologized and treated her with respect from that point forth.

As we were always told, "It's the thought that counts".

Intentions matter immensely, in my opinion.

If that guy was serious about women not being able to play with tech gadgets, then I'd see why she'd get offended.

But his intentions were positive, not negative. On the other hand, your comment towards me was nothing but negative.

Not necessarily. Saying that I bet you longed for the days when being a moron was acceptable is not the same as saying that you are a Moron. In the days before so called Political Correctness, being a Chauvinistic Moron was acceptable. Your posts seemed to indicate that you longed for those times, whether you lived through them or not. Now stop being such a Nancy Boy and Lighten up 😉

you need to adopt a new kind of humor. Me, I would just told her "We're watching nerd porn". It'd be offensive if I wasn't a nerd.

You're single, aren't you?
No, I'm happily married. My wife appreciates my kind of humor, though; she always makes fun of me because I don't like girly things. "Oh, you're a guy, you won't understand," and so forth. I'm used to it. I guess other people aren't.

Live and learn.

It helps if you know the person first. If you two knew each other, it wouldn't be a big deal at all. But if it's the first thing you say when establishing contact -- especially in an office environment -- you run the risk of getting shot down, or, as you put it, owned.

When you first met your would-be wife, you probably didn't start things off by joking about how women can't drive, for example. Just a guess.

exactly

whats also telling is when you give us the anecdotal of how you and your wife joke around about sexist things. You can't treat all women the same as you do your wife. i hope you've learned this basic rule of life.

Jesus, I cant believe how many people are sticking up for this anal-retentive broad. It was a harmless joke that she is obviously ill-equipped to deal with. I suggest she step into the real world. The people at my workplace (mostly 40 and 50-ish, but a few 20-somethings) tell some of the raunchiest jokes I've ever heard, regardless of who is around. I'll come in everyday and my boss will tell me 2 or 3 dirty jokes openly. Where the hell was this lady raised that she is so sheltered and feels threatened by a line about gizmos? <shakes head.> 😕

Because they have been told by the goddamn liberals how they are supposed to think. You don't see this crap everywhere? Look at the case of the African American ladies suing Southwest. How absurd is that? Political Correctness went too far a long time ago, and the liberal namby pamby people get their panties in a wad over the slightest problem. It irks the hell out of me; I really think it is a huge problem in society. People now get offended at some of the stupidest things. Why? Why are we so thin-skinned. I seriously think it is a problem indicative of people KNOWING they can make a quick buck off of a sexual harassment or racism lawsuit. Complete and unmitigated BS.

Unfortunately, thanks to peaceniks, PC-bullsh!t-flingers, feminists, and other general squat-to-pee Nancy-Boys, the days of being able to tell "grey area" jokes are dying rapidly. Everything is offensive.

And I do my part to keep it alive by offending as many people as possible to balance out the hippies.

Unfortunately for you since you are a limp wristed lisp nobody takes you seriously. And another thing Fungo, don't use my phrases, they only work for me!🙂 j/k

I seem to have offended you sufficiently into responding. 😀
