"Yes, you've been pampered, cosseted, doted upon, helmeted, bubble-wrapped," McCullough said in his speech. “Yes, capable adults with other things to do have held you, kissed you, fed you, wiped your mouth, wiped your bottom, trained you, taught you, tutored you, coached you, listened to you, counseled you, encouraged you, consoled you and encouraged you again. You've been nudged, cajoled, wheedled and implored. You've been feted and fawned over and called sweetie pie. ... But do not get the idea you're anything special. Because you're not."

Driving the point home, he added, "Think about this: even if you're one in a million, on a planet of 6.8 billion that means there are nearly 7,000 people just like you."

Awesome. 😀

Fortunately I found that I do not have to be special in order to enjoy life and be happy.

Life itself is a miracle. The fact we are intelligent enough to understand that we are floating on a giant rock that just happens to be in a habitable distance from the sun and in a time where the earth itself is habitable is amazing.
Dudes a dumbass.

The number of individual organisms alive on this planet right now is so large, it's utterly inconceivable. And that represents such an infintessimal fraction of all organisms that have ever lived on this planet, that it's even more utterly inconceivable. And that's just one planet out of a number so incomprehensible that we can't begin to fathom it. On a universal scale, we are so utterly insignificant that if we ceased to exist, nothing would change.

So, yes, you're special, sunshine. Just like everything else.

Its the same attitude that says we'll its been done before a million times so its nothing special and why should I care to do it. Then the same person just sits on the couch and tells themselves they didn't miss anything.
Everyday I'm alive and able to spend with those I love is special. Sorry if your life sucks man. Mines pretty damn special.

Of course it is. You're viewing it from the perspective of you. My life is pretty special to me. To a child in Botswana, my life doesn't mean all that much. To a paramecium on the ocean floor, it's probably less so. As we broaden our scope, our individual accomplishments and accolades become less and less meaningful. It doesn't mean we aren't special in our own circles. But on the grandest of scales, it all amounts to nothing.

Now, admittedly, that's a slightly pessimistic view to take, and I don't advocate using that as an excuse for accomplishing nothing; you should still endeavor to be a good person in your time on this planet. But it's dangerous to start thinking of yourself in a more grandiose way than everyone else. We're all special. Which also means none of us are.

I read that in Affleck's voice in "The Town", LOL.
I was torn between Mark Wahlberg in "The Departed," Alec Baldwin in "The Departed," Matt Damon in "The Departed," Jack Nicholson in "The Departed"... actually, just everyone from "The Departed." Or Tom Hanks in "Catch Me If You Can."

Knock knock...
