Lesser humans by default? I would be willing to bet that there are more non union employees posting at work here than union based on percentage.

I would also be willing to bet the next fire in your neighborhood will be put out by Union members, so watch the insults.
It was a joke, though I'm willing to bet most union people arn't sitting at a desk all day.
All the firemen in my neighborhood are volunteer. All the policeman in my neighborhood are nonunion.

Thats cause their workin and not sittin on their ass :)

Yeah mine are volunteer because I live in the county.

They are my favorite lighter beers. I've tried may brands (I DID go to uni), but these are the ones i like. (from fav and down)

Hoegaarden
Carlsberg
Stella
Heineken
Rickard's Red
Killkenny

That, or most of them don't have desk jobs. Kind of hard to be on the internet from an assembly line.

Kinda. Weekdays I'm in Waterloo, weekends are usually in TO. If you're ever around 'loo, that'd be good. Not much to do around here but bike and drink ;)

Waterloo is a fun city, my Mom is for the area.
I tend to visit London, Guelph and Toronto on a regular basis.
Going for a drink is fine with me :)

So stunt, while you're going through your hoops I had to let a guy go today.

It basically went like this:

His attendance was a problem and he wasn't even at work. I called him and left a brief message. He called me back. I let him go in a nice manner. He understood. End of story.

If what you say is true and you still can't fire the guy, then you have the most worthless management job on the planet. I kinda can't blame you for wanting to strut your e-penis on here since they obviously don't give you any power at work.

HR made a decision...
I was on the same page as the Plant Manager on this.
Until you deal with strict unions, you will never understand the complications associated with doing our jobs. I'm content with knocking him flat on his face, and firing him at will. He will not be here come August.

What you need to do is go and get a whole bunch of migrant workers. Pay them in petty cash. Have them execute and dispose of the bodies of all your worthless crap workers you got there.

Haha...
Sorry, anyone who does actual work has to be in the Union...
Union negotiates rates for several facilities.

I'm sure it depends on the company, but I've never been fired.

I tried to get fired from a job a couple years ago. Couldn't do it. I spent all day surfing the web instead of working, harassed female employees (actually dated one co-worker briefly, a drop dead gorgeous Mexican girl), berated fellow employees during meetings, sent cruel replies to internal e-mails, even a few snide e-mails to customers. I eventually quit, and the owner begged me to come back, and offered me a bonus if I stayed long enough! I stayed for a few more months, and finally ended up quitting again, before I got the bonus though.

I agree...60% of the guys are good and want the company to do well.
10% are complete morons and are quite destructive.
30% are sheep following the 10% but still put in a half decent day's work.

Was he drinking then? Or just buying beer for later?

Not allowed to leave the jobsite, period.

You're telling me that the Union didn't negotiate even a lunch break for their members? Honestly the guy is better off without the job if that's the case.

8 straight hours of manual labor = craptastic.

Obviously this plant will not survive with such crappy employees.

Shut it down immediately.

Just about every perk taken for granted by today's workers, is a benefit negotiated by and fought for by union workers of yesterday.

8 hour wark day (with overtime after that)? Union benefit.
Paid vacations? You guessed it...another union-gotten goodie
Sick leave? Uh-huh...That's right, thank a union member.
Pension? Unions fought for and started the trend.
Social Security? Unions led the fight to get that established as a minimum pension.
Safety regulations to keep you from getting hurt at work? ANOTHER union benefit.

The list goes on and on, of the things that my union forefathers fought (and sometimes died for), that people today take for granted. If all the unions folded today, you could count on wages starting to drop tomorrow. Why? Because without the threat of a union coming into a place of employment, companies can revert back to the ways of yesteryear. Many provisions are already being defeated at the hands of a union-busting Republican government.
Prevailing wages. Helps keep the standard of living up for workers in a given area. NOT based on Union wages as is often lied, but the PREVAILING wage in an area...where unions are strong, that keeps that wage high, so workers can make a liveable wage. In strong NON-union areas, wages are often just above minimum wage.

Safety Many provisions of safety and work compensation laws are under attack every day in Congress and state houses across our country. Big Business doesn't like it when government tells them they have to take care of the workers, (especially if it's going to cost them money). Someone gets hurt? Fire them and hire a replacement is the old way of thinking, and it's coming back in many places. California is one of them . Ahnold's Work Comp reform gutted the few provisions that helped get an injured worker back to work, or re-trained into a field where he/she could continue to work...

Overtime...Many places have eliminated the requirement that the company pay overtime after 8 hours, reverting instead to the 40 hr/week standard. That means they can work you 4X10, or even 3X13 hours without paying you overtime (I've done it in the Rocky Mountain states). Some places are trying to classify more workers as exempt managers, so they can work them all the hours they want, with NO overtime at all...

Anti-Discrimination..Here's another union fought protection that is constantly under attack. Most recent, was the "whistle-blower" protection. That was overturned at the behest of big business and big government. Tell on your boss for breaking the law? Get fired, and even prosecuted...

Many of us have seen &/or heard about the lazy union worker, who only keeps his job because of union protection. Often, (sadly) it's true. There are sluggards in every business, union or non-union, but all too often, the non-union slugs are only keeping their job due to nepotism.
In my trades, (heavy construction) slackers are soon weeded out from a job. Doesn't mean they can't be dispatched again to another job, but if they're not any good, they get sent "down the road" again. If a comtractor wants, he can class the employee as "Not Qualified"...A member gets 3 of those "NQ" discharges within a certain period, he/she is required to go to the apprenticeship training center and be tested for minimum qualification...
That's a protection for the employer, as well as the rest of the employees on the job, AND, it helps to ensure that only qualified hands get dispatched.

Yes, there are some bad union hands out there, but in my trade, we don't tolerate them...do your job right, or go the hell home...

I used to work in a grocery store, and all the union ever did for me was take a few hundred dollars out of my pay check each year. :(

Curious, but what was your wage under the union. I bet it was a lot higher than it would have been without the union.

I call the difference in wages between union and non-union "non-union dues". I may pay about $65./month in dues, (plus quite a bit in supplemental dues as well), but when the wage gap for construction equipment operators is something in the area of $15-$20/hour, I'll GLADLY pay my dues...PLUS, our benefit package is often "priced" higher than many non-union operators even get on the check, with NO benefits....
Even at that, unoin labor is more cost efficient, because the hands are better trained, work moreefficiently, USUALLY have better work ethics, and are drug tested periodically.

I appreciate your views but I think times have changed. I find it ridiculous that working as a checker in a grocery store should yield you $50,000 a year just because they're union members. It's gone too far. If you walk into a grocery store with a Phd or a MBA you still have to start as a bagger for $9/hr because the union is there "protecting" their employees.

Also, Social Security is now a burden. Why should I have to put something like 12% into social security? If I'm off by a few percent excuse me but truth is I'm never going to see it. My grandmother died in her 90's and there was no way in hell she could have done jack squat with the measly amount that social security provided. I'd much rather invest my own money rather than give it to the government and never see it.

Things have to change and based on what stunt has posted I'd say unions have got some serious issues.

What happens if you try to work a union job but don't want to be a member of the union? I bet that's a problem. Those fees can be quite a chunk of change and I'm sure that not everyone wants to pay them.
