the most efficient techie is the most lazy 😉

they like to set things up in the least time-consuming way.

Here here

we have to do that due to firewalling

if i remote in from home to work on a remote site, say in wisconsin, it goes like this

1-fire up VPN on my home box (via satellite)
2-hit my cubicle PC via RDP
3-RDP into a server in the datacenter
4-RDP into the remote server in Wisconsin

so i have to use 4 computers to get onto the desktop of the remote box

(desktop to laptop, laptop to work server)

or

have directly copied contents of your local CDROM to the drive of a remote server.

Hmm, I don't think that qualifies as an uber geek... a higher geek creature maybe, but not uber geek.
And, yes... I do it all the time.

Nah.. You should change #1 to:

1. Create SSH tunnel to your firewall, Remote Control 1 machine, then use that machine to remote control others in your network.

Today I did

My workstation=>Master workstation=>Deployment server=>My home router=>My home desktop=>My girlfriend's laptop

It was then that I found out that she was in the next freaking room. I thought she was at home and I was just going to screw with her head a little bit.

Speaking of screwing with someone... anyone ever start up music on their desktop (or played weird sound files) while remoted into it from their living room ? Or maybe eject the CD tray ?

why would you remote to a machine from a remoted machine?

i'm obviously not dorky enough.

If only 1 machine is accessible from outside, you remote to it, then from there to another machine on its network

for this ^ reason... amongst others 😉

haha - I did that to my roommate in college once. Turned up the volume on max - and then played music remotely. My 2nd roommate knew about this in advance and he told me the scene was hilarious.
