The prisoner's "take home pay" is about $130 a month. If you compare it to someone working in a call center for $8/hour, that isn't too bad once you consider food, housing, etc costs. You are probably better off in prison if your employer doesn't pay for health / dental insurance.
In fact, I'm gonna work it out.
A person working for $8 an hour (seems to be the call center average wage around here) is looking at about $1050 in take home pay (say $6.50/hr after taxes). I'd say less because of the nickel and dime bullshit withholdings such as Medicare, social security, et al, but lets pretend our call center worker is lucky or something.
Factor in
Rent :: $400ish
Food :: $150ish
Electricity :: $ 30
Water/sewer :: $ 40
Phone :: $ 25
Bus pass :: $ 60 (jesus has that gone up)
Health :: $120
Dental :: $ 50
I don't think I'm exaggerating about anything here by the way.
You're looking at about of $175 in "actual money" you have left over.
What isn't included in that $175 is (deep breath); Credit card payments, Child support, internet, cable TV, magazines, newspapers and pretty much everything freaking else. You're looking at another $90 or so if you own a car for liability insurance alone, not to mention gas, the parking fee for your work / apartment, or a car payment. I'm not even going to think of adding a course at your local community college ($350 with the book is pretty cheap) .
