You're almost better off in prison and here's proof.

The prisoner's "take home pay" is about $130 a month. If you compare it to someone working in a call center for $8/hour, that isn't too bad once you consider food, housing, etc costs. You are probably better off in prison if your employer doesn't pay for health / dental insurance.

In fact, I'm gonna work it out.

A person working for $8 an hour (seems to be the call center average wage around here) is looking at about $1050 in take home pay (say $6.50/hr after taxes). I'd say less because of the nickel and dime bullshit withholdings such as Medicare, social security, et al, but lets pretend our call center worker is lucky or something.

Factor in
Rent :: $400ish
Food :: $150ish
Electricity :: $ 30
Water/sewer :: $ 40
Phone :: $ 25
Bus pass :: $ 60 (jesus has that gone up)
Health :: $120
Dental :: $ 50

I don't think I'm exaggerating about anything here by the way.

You're looking at about of $175 in "actual money" you have left over.
What isn't included in that $175 is (deep breath); Credit card payments, Child support, internet, cable TV, magazines, newspapers and pretty much everything freaking else. You're looking at another $90 or so if you own a car for liability insurance alone, not to mention gas, the parking fee for your work / apartment, or a car payment. I'm not even going to think of adding a course at your local community college ($350 with the book is pretty cheap) .

Well I haven't made as little as $8/hr since I was 15. Also, for prison you have to factor in, butt rape, gang fights, no women, no alcohol, limited computer access(if any), probably mundane food as well. Even if I did make only $8/hr I'd prefer being broke and in debt over prison.

In prison you'd also need at least one of the following items:
-Vaseline
-Preparation H
-cigarette bribe to prevent the a$$-rapings

After a while, that money adds up.

$8 is awfully low, even out here in PA call center jobs pay $10-11+.

Prison is not about witholding the necessities, it's about loss of freedom.

We can't take away medical, dental, heat, running water, etc. As much as we may want to at times, we cannot stoop to that.

Much of what we pay by choice, nobody says we HAVE to have our own apartment, our own bedroom, etc. Do you think we spend that kind of money housing prisoners? If you lived like them your costs would be a lot lower. We as a culture put a great amount of value on our personal space, & we pay for it. Personally I'd much rather pay the $1000 a month to support myself & have the freedom that comes with it.

You're entitled to make your own choice, if you want to go to prison it should be relatively easy to gain admittance.

...*gasp* THAT'S IT! KILL THEM ALL! MWUAHAHAHAHA! A 9mm bullet IS cheaper than $40,000 per year per inmate. I LOVE IT!

Have you SEEN the Sheridan State Prison in Sheridan Oregon, Gregg? It's a fusking RESORT. Prison should be hard labor. Plain and simple.

Damn dude, that is CHEAP living. Here's some of what my girlfriend and I have to deal with monthly:

Rent: $3000 (1000' sq ft townhouse in Gramercy area in Manhattan so it's a KILLER deal)
Food: $500-$700 depending on frequency of outside dining
Electricity: $100-$135
Phones: $300 (have 2 cell phones ($160/month) 2 land lines ($110/month) and vonage ($35-50/month)
Public transportation: $80-$100 month

Are these for the resort prisons only? Cuz lets not forget the federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison

I agree with the hard labor, but they still need somewhere to sleep. Althought I do think giving prisoners weight rooms, internet, cable tv, etc is BS.

Ok, roll your eyes at me, but the quote makes a broad generalization. It doesn't say "prisoners who work in the prison." It just says, "The prisoner's 'take home pay' is about $130 a month." Without any other reference, I think it's fair to assume it means all prisoners. Besides, that's why I asked. 😛
