Post all of your minor quirks or annoyances or features that you would like to see fixed or added either in a Windows Update or with the release of Windows 7. I made this thread with Vista in mind, but XP/2000 users can chime in too.

1. No longer allow any program to steal focus from another program.
2. Folders need to remember the icon size/type you set from the last time you used them.
3. The start menu needs to stop closing every time I delete something from it.
4. I want to be able to drag and drop taskbar programs, and I would also like to be able to move them to the system tray.

That's all I can think of for the moment. I'll add more as I remember or encounter them 🙂

In addition to all you listed in the OP:

1. Make indexing less intrusive.
2. Make detail view the default view except for things like pictures folders.
3. Make it so you can pin a specific folder shortcut to the taskbar, instead of having it pinned as just a generic Windows Explorer shortcut.

This is off topic but I figured I would ask. Is there any way to add attachments or images to a post or is that planned for the upgrade?

There is no way for the average user and even mods for that matter to add attachments or images. Only certain admins can do this with our current forum software. I have no idea if attachments are planned for the jump to vBulletin, as many of the members like the "clean" look that disabled images and attachments gives the board, as well as the ability to avoid abuse of these features.

Yeah, it annoys me that when I try to pin a folder to the taskbar, it just goes into the explorer jumplist.

1. Bring the sidebar back.
2. Allow me to remove components I dont need without resorting to dirty hacks like vlite - I simply do not need DVD maker or Media Center on a netbook when I only have 8gb of space. They had planned to do this originally, but they seem to have pulled back in the end. I also do not need a cache of the dvd source on the disk so I can "upgrade" to a higher version, when I have no intention of ever doing so.
3. I'd like my PCs to actually go to sleep after 15 minutes like theyre supposed to, instead of doing so for a day or two and then inexplicably stopping because "a kernel component is preventing sleep".
4. Built in virus scanning (which supposedly will happen eventually, not just for Win 7)

I wouldnt mind the option to have the show desktop button on left near the start button.
Its seems my cursor is always over there and i have to move all the way to right to click it when i need to.

I like to see built in skinning like a full set of Stardock type UI
I would like to see real time copying and moving function with realistic time of completion.
A Dual Pane or multi pane file manager.
The setting for folders to remember there settings system wide and singular would be nice.
Help files that really help.
Windows Hotkeys for shutdown and restart.
DRM free media player.

Don't tell me that you are installing drivers for the mouse, especially after I just moved it one USB port over
Please, make the window borders smaller
Don't resort to a list for live preview after too many IE tabs, or Explorer windows are open, trust me, my system can handle it
When you idle, please idle, don't idle at 5% CPU, idle at 0% CPU
Please logout/shutdown faster
Please have better trackpad acceleration
Don't jump the cursor, ignore accidental trackpad input when typing
Please make programs aware that I have the taskbar on top, stop letting them slide under it
Make the taskbar impenetrable, makes my life easier when I am arranging windows
The drag to the side, drag to the top window resizing thing is cool, make it cooler. Drag to the corner to take 1/4 of the screen. Give me some control over it to dictate sizes
Make the networking a little bit, you know, workier

That's it for now, might add some more later

I don't like the placement of that either.
Fortunately it is far easier to use the keyboard shortcut to accomplish this.

there is no decent multidesktop app. None feel right and are not incorporated nicely into the gui. Also they have quirky behavior with a lot of stuff.

Another thing i would like is: like in ubuntu, when you dont have focus on a window you can still scroll without focus. Mouse over and scroll wheel, with no focus. Big plus in ubuntu.

More stable.
Smaller footprint.
Less "kewl" and more functional.

In other words, stop ripping off Mac and start ripping off Linux.

OS X does the same. It is one of the biggest things that i miss when I am on a windows box.

i have always wanted the option to do what 'tasxix' does. move the icons at the bottom around in what order you like. for those of us slight pedantic people (heh) that like to have things in a specific order.

i would also *love* a program like synergy to be built in - a virtual KM switch. been using it for a while but is flaky on win7. seems to disconnect a lot on the server (win7) side.

more than anything though, the option to actually customise windows - as in permanently remove that fucking 'optimize this folder for pictures' option!!! i dont care if there are photos in there, stopping fucking with my layout ffs! worse part is that it changes itself back eventually for no fucking reason.

rant aside, making the built in firewall usable would be good - meaning one that asks you to allow/block traffic (incoming and outgoing) and building rules on those decisions.

yeah OSX also implements the multidesktops (spaces) pretty damn good. I didnt realize that osx did that though. Even though i use it lol. Less now, i upgraded video card and laptop (with new unsupport video card).

Problem is that i really prefer office 07 to mac office 08. Also games of course lol. And it seems Microsoft is trying to hold on to these 'edges' IE: games for windows 🙁 and making shitty versions of office for mac.

7 was supposed to have something like spaces but it got scratched...

Maybe we should hope that 7 flops big time in hope of creating more competition?

Oh, here are some big ones:

1. Resume file transfers that have errored out for some reason in Windows Explorer.

2. Transfer or move files in some kind of discernible order if there is no resume feature.

3. Ask at the START of transfers if you want to replace or keep duplicate files so that it doesn't pause on you sometime unpredictably in the middle while you're away from your desk and you come back to it 6 hours later only to see that it's been paused for 5.5 hours and is actually only 10% done with the file operations.

4. Integrate mouse gestures for easier navigation in Windows Explorer.

Blame Creative for the crappy drivers.

Better dual monitor options, like solid remembrance of how programs should open and which monitor (ex: window size, location, etc). Also, chidl windows should ALWAYS open on top of the parent, not on another monitor. Nothing worse then opening up photoshop or another program and the tool bars are spread all over the place accross both monitors.

Currently, it's the programs themselves that manage this on their own, so it's inconsistant. Would be nice if Windows managed it and there would be an extra option in the window title for configuring this.
