"Your video card or drivers are not compatible with Media Center"

For Black Friday I picked up a Visiontek HD Radeon 2600 Pro AGP. The first thing I noticed was that no drivers from ATI's website would install. Tried 7.7 and 7.11 and got "Setup did not find a driver compatible with your hardware." But the driver installation from the CD did work, so I have Cat7.9 with no apparent AGP issues. When I open Media Center (in XP MCE 05) I get "Your video card or drivers are not compatible with Media Center." Any known fix or workaround?

Now that the drivers from the cd work, install the new ones from the website and try again. It is what I had to do with my new 8800gt, cd first and then the new ones.

I always install the latest drivers from NVidia website.

Even if they are only "beta" drivers, this is the only way to get the latest software.

Drivers on the CD's that come with the cards might be 1-2 months old.

JustaGeek, go back and try actually reading the first post again.

AVP, I did try upgrading to 7.11 but I got the same error.

Also, the DirectX 3D tests return an error message about creating a 3D device. This is both before and after reinstalling DX9c.

Thanks for being rude, lifer.

Good luck with your new AGP card!

This may help you.
Think there was a problem with the HD 2600 and MCE 2005 .There is hope though.
I read that ATI is working on cat 7.12 to address AGP problems

LOL, don't be so hard on yourself. Just a reading issue, that's all! :)

VChuck, thanks for the link - some interesting info in there.

try nero home. Windows media center has a specific list of video cards it works with... Last time I checked it only had 10 cards on it.

I'll see if I have Nero somewhere. I think it's the new video card drivers though, there have been lots of these kind of problems (especially for AGP users) since Catalyst 7.8. Oddly enough I didn't have this issue with my X1600 Pro, but I don't remember what driver version I had either.

Rude is rude, pal, any way you slice it.

His point stands though... you told him to try v7.11 and he explicitly said he tried v7.11 in his original post... he was pointing out that you missed it when reading it. And only in a mildly (and understandably) rude manner.
He could have referenced your mother, sexual orientation, and possible make refernces tenancies to consume fecal matter as a pretext to telling you to read more carefully... instead he simply to you to "actually read" the first post... decidedly tame reaction (although not as mild saying "yes, I did try it")

FWIW, I get the same error on my 9800Pro in MCE. I've tried 7.10 and 7.11 and can't seem to get around it. Everything seems to work ok, as far as I can tell.....

yeah the drivers for the 2600 pro 512mb are junk right now. I am using this card just until I finish buying all the parts to complete my upgrade to pcie. For some reason mine crashes whenever I change resolutions in Vista 64. try the 8.43 drivers found here they seem a bit better.

You'd think after 11,700 posts here, I'd already know better than to use the older software on the CDs. But maybe he's right, and I should go to the nVidia website from now on.

Anyways ...

( :) )

Seems like ATI's drivers for AGP cards have been rough the past few months. I can't enable hardware acceleration in WinDVD, even with the DVD decoder installed. I'm tempted to revert to 7.7 or earlier and see how they run. I have a similar issue on my main PC even though I'm using Omega drivers which have a workaround built in. And I've reinstalled my chipset drivers and DirectX.

EDIT: Jojo, I'm tempted to try your idea but I read mixed reviews on them. I wonder if those are the same package on the CD (probably not). I did download something from them earlier today which I have to try out. In any case that's a damn good link.

The 8.43s from Visiontek installed without a problem, but the same symptoms are present :( Guess I'll just have to wait for 7.12.

Oddly enough, I tried an in-place installation of Cat 7.7 (without uninstalling first) and still got the "Setup did not find an existing driver or compatible hardware" message.

Thanks vailr, I didn't mention it but I have been using Driver Cleaner Pro all this time.

I can't believe the 7.7 Cats (the last version to not have AGP problems, apparently) won't install, either as an 'upgrade' or standalone. Kinda sounds like Visiontek has come a long way since I worked for them :p

Have you tried using WinRAR to extract the 7.11's (driver only download) into a folder, then using the "update driver" option under Display Adapters in the Device Manager.

* It looks like WinRAR won't extract the .exe, however another program might be able to.

Thanks John, I haven't tried that but I'm willing to give it a shot. Not sure what program will extract but if you or anyone else can point me in the right direction I'll be glad to try it.

I think I have it fixed, at least somewhat.

I used Universal Extractor and extracted the 7.11s to a folder I made, and tried to update manually via Device Manager. Oddly enough, the 7.11's .inf doesn't list any cards newer than the X1650 series.

I then extracted the 7.7s to another folder and in the list off possible devices I saw the following three choices:

ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro
ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro AGP
ATI Radeon HD 2600

I chose the 2600's entry, slightly worried about not having an explicit 'AGP' choice, but it seemed to accept it okay. It prompted me to look for a couple of files, the first (filename I can't remember now) was already in the 7.7's extracted output. I remember the second being ativvaxx.dat, and in that case I directed it to the 7.11's extracted files.

After rebooting, I anixously awaited with baited breath, but got no blue screen, no error messages, no nuthin'. I ran dxdiag and all the 3D tests ran without complaint. I opened Media Center and got no warning or anything, just straight in and off to the races. So I think things are in a working state, good enough until next month when 7.12 *should* fix everything for us AGP users.

As for WinDVD, it still won't give me the option of using hardware decode acceleration, and I'm beginning to suspect maybe it never has - that it's too old (version 4) or that it's OEM (came with my motherboard) and that I need to pay for an upgrade. Whatever. Things play, things work, I'm happy for now.

Hey Steve! Thats great man gives me hope for the HD2600 agp. that AVS thread has alot of info and registry hacks for agp to get DXVA?H/A working.Read Exdeus and Arfster's guides
Heard that MCE 2005 did not recognize the HD 2600.
Really Glad that this worked for you.because now I have more options with my MCE 2005. and don't have to wait for the HD3850agp that may( or not!) appear

Yeah, I looked through those and while I could have pulled off those hacks, I really didn't feel like going to all that trouble. Supposedly 7.12 will fix everything so I'm going to hold out and see. If it does, great. If not, back to the drawing board. I heard about the 3850 AGP at Something Awful's tech forum, if it does come out soon those 7.12s better fix everything for AGP or they'll have hell to pay!

For reasons that you just stated,Is exactly why I sent my Sapphire HD2600 XT agp back.
That 3850 agp would be ideal,if it comes out.yeah there will be alot of angry people if cat 7.12 fail. but at least ATI has acknowledged the problems for agp and is working on it.ATI did'nt abandon us like Nvidia did.(Remember?)just when I finally bought a Leadtek 6600GT,for MCE 2005 w/o ur2
